When starting game, no units are created

Running TA:Spring 0.61b2 (latest version, out-of-the-box install, no mods, nothing changed in the install).
Operating system is Windows 98SE.
Processor is Duron 1300MHz.
RAM is a 256 MB stick of 100MHz SDRAM.
Video card is Radeon 9200SE (64 MB version)
When I attempt to run the game in singleplayer mode, irrelevant of what script I run or which of the three pre-installed maps I try to use, no units are created. When I attempt to run the game in multiplayer mode nobody can join the game when I host (I've checked my firewall and port forwarding is set up correctly. No, do not bug me about this, it IS set up correctly, believe me I've checked and I'm entirely capable of setting up port forwarding, having done it plenty of other times with other games. This is NOT a network problem). I have not been able to join multiplayer games hosted by others in order to test whether these work. The renderer starts up fine, I get a map I can roam the camera around freely and what have you (it looks spiffy, BTW :D), there are simply no units being created on the battlefield - here's a screenshot:
Help?

I've got a 9600 and have the same problem. I've been told that it only works with Windows 2000, XP, and in rare occurances on ME.
However, you're correct, the maps are beautiful.

I have a 9600SE and have no problems with it, triaxx... in fact it runs pretty well, reflections and shadows and all that jazz...

I've got a 9600PRO, so I know it's my operating system. I've still got 98.
And until just recently, I never saw anything that said it needed XP.

hello everyone
i got the same problem and i also use win98se, fully patched, directx9c, geforce 3, 256mb ram.
why should spring only run on xp or 2000? all needed functionality should be provided by direct x, which is perfectly running on 98, even newer games like warcraft 3 are runnig without a flaw... so i think this problem occurs because some code is "problematical" programmed... and should be treated as generic problem ... because it can be intepreted as sign of not enough generic or robust code... at the moment it is "only" a problem of the win98 users but maybay sometimes it can lead to even greater problems on other different systems....
...only my 2 cent

win 98 is "problematical" and a stability issue.
Not runing in these oses, makes spring more stable per se...
trying to make it work fine in win 98 is a risk.
staying away from win98 is a stability solution already :D
thus win 98 is quite old atm, and unstable.. and insecure.. and... why in this world whould anyone use it when your system can handle 2k-xp?
but have no idea why it really doesnt.
anyhow, a guy using ME was able to play it, but some others arent...

no... bad written programs are a bigger "risk" at win98 then xp ... but it can also be seen as kind "errordetection" ... like on this spring bug..
there are several reasons to use win98 ... smaller in size, lower hardware requierements, better backward compatibility (dos) , better control over system... and from security point of view... an older well known and patched os is much better then an newer "experimental" one like xp....
take a look here....

an proof for the unrobust behavior of spring (not the os) is text problem with the radeon 9200...

Whiles't 98 does have the better backwards compatability, it is definatly not more secur nor does it have as much controll. For those its 2000 SP4 everytime. Thats why alot of companies still use it.
XP is a mixed bag, but for home use I think its great.
Linux rule everything though (with a good distro)

If you don't know what to do to help them to debug the game, that mean you don't have the skill to do it.
Man it's not as easy to debug such game.
And they don't have win98, so it's harder.

If you speak about the Radeon9200 bug, I dunno but i have seen that this bug appear only when the map size is less than 24x24

Spring is made in C++ , so you will have to learn this language if you want to fix some bug , or adding feature.

ok
but isn t more easy for first to use a step by step debug for found the missing
i m sure it s a little problem because we are in game and it s not crash
the frame is 0 and stay always 0
is frame count(for xp users) start automaticly ?
