I resolved the issue by re-installing my sound card this time... last time it may have been video that got pooched... still... any guesses what's happening?

So... this is the second time I'm seen this, I try to run a demo, get an error, then Spring, nor a buch of other games on my computer anymore... any guesses? Last time I just re-installed my ATI drivers, but this time no such luck...
Edit: It might not be GL... remebering that TA used DX sound I the dxdiag tests... 3d test fine but... looky here... direct sound test results in:

WinAmp doesn't work anymore either...

Edits to show: I tried the OGL renderer in Wings3D and it works fine... so I guess it's not a OGL issue

Check your RAM.

DO you mean I A: have bad ram, B: don't have enough ram or C: check what the ram is doing when it dies again?

Check to see if it's bad. Run memtest86 for a few hours... though that doesn't always catch all errors. I have some RAM I need to send back under warranty because it was bad, but it passed 15 hours of memtest. Anyway, if you have any old spare RAM that fits your PC and you know to work, try putting it in for a while and see if you have the same problems. The same applies to the video card, if the RAM doesn't seem to be the case... and it's also best if you strip down the PC to the barebones required to run (CPU, mobo, RAM, vid card, hard drive, maybe an NIC and sound card if applicable), and test with as few other programs running in the background as possible.

Looks like you have a bad memory module. Try
reseating the memory or switching memory module
locations. You need to test the memory and replace the
bad module.
