Permission to archive art @ opengameart.org?

Greets!

I'm Bart, the proprietor of OpenGameArt.org, a site intended to archive game media (graphics, models, audio, etc) that's safe to use in Free / Open Source projects. I was wondering if it would be okay if I archived the artwork from the various Spring Engine projects on my site. (Mind you, I realize that it's legal to do so as long as it's licensed appropriately, but I want to respect the wishes of the devs and artists, regardless of how the art is actually licensed.)

All arts assets (models, textures) in Spring: 1944 are CC-BY-NC so as long as that's respected, go right ahead.

Practically all of the files on ModelBase are applicable, and are either CC-BY-SA or Artistic License 2 (which is fairly Open Source in nature). Feel free to use any models I've put up there, the only trouble is that they'd have to be exported from S3O back to 3DS.

What's S30 format, anyway? If Blender can read it, I'll change the site to allow it to be uploaded. If not, is there a way I can get your original 3DS files?

S3O is Spring's internal model format. There is a blender-to-S3O exporter, but I don't know if the reverse exists.

@pxtl: UpSpring can export S3O to obj, and that can be imported into Blender. Thesleepless also made a blender s3o importer, which I can't get to function.

@Lendrick/Bart: Hi! I've actually been following your site for a little while now, (coincidentally, looking for models we could put into our projects :P ). All of my models are public domain, and you are free to use them. their sources are on modelbase ( http://planet-wars.eu/ModelBase ) and in my models thread ( http://springrts.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=17630 ). Additionally, the project I am part of (Complete Annihilation, http://caspring.org ) is licensed under GPL, and you're free to use the art assets we have made for it. In both these cases, accreditation is appreciated :wink:

Upspring can indeed export to OBJ, and 3DS. However with OBJ the object data is lost entirely (the model becomes one solid object), and with both formats all welding (smoothing) data is lost.

@SeanHuron: if you look at the ModelBase entries in the RSS view (as opposed to viewing the SVN) the License is listed there.

A project like this is very badly needed! There is a vast swathe of open source game development talent out there with very little open source art talent. I wish you the best of sucess in the world because i hope to take advantage of your efforts in future ;).

A lot of the stuff on modelbase is shit/untextured/unfinished though, sadly.

Ill see about getting you the spherebot sourcefiles (i need to get them on modelbase anyway).

KDR also has made a lot of free stuff, but its almost all untextured (And i doubt anyone would want the KP stuff).

Get Upspring if you want to start exporting content from Spring models (s44 etc) but if you go and poke them some they might just hand over the whole sourcefiles which would be much easier.

Everything for the Spring engine is a bit out of date tech wise though. No model deformation, and one single UV map texture per model. So there is that.

upspring unwields everything and this destroys smoothing groups.

The last time i used upspring I actually started porting Springs s3o-parsing code to java.

Sure. Would you like them in Blender format, or in UpSpring format? Either way, they're included in the Kernel Panic complete installer. The s3o in the 7-zip in /mods/, the .blend in the .rar archive in /KP_Sources/ (make sure you tick "sources" when installing KP, btw).
