Saved games

Okay, following my intial problems which have mostly been worked around, I'm at the point where I'm playing games. Because games are rather long-winded sometimes, saving is nice.... except when it has some issues.
a) I saved a game with Complete Annihilation. I was playing again three hard chicken AI things. The "save" screen came up for about 2 seconds then went away, I assumed it had saved but was unable to ever find the save file (it's certainly not in the save directory). :-S
b) I was playing Metal Isles with XTA against 3 AI's. The game suddenly started having some performance issues (one "tick" every 20 seconds) - I paused it (which took a minute or two to enact), then saved it. Whilst saving the game crashed - I think at the end of the saving (I have a 12MB save file for it now).
Crash log is attached - I have the 12meg save if there's somewhere I can send/attach it. c) Maybe a silly question but... how do you actually Load a save? SpringLobby has options for /watching/ a save (which didn't work - it complained about something team related) while SpringSP and TASclient have no options for loading at all.
d) Saving takes a smidgen less time than forever (i.e. 10 minutes!) to take place (3 AIs plus me, so probably only 1000-1500 units in game). Is this normal? - Athlon 3800, so not inconsiderable processing power.
