Vista: Does it really suck that much?

Got my college laptop, this thing's a beast compared to my old one (which had what Intel considered the top of the line for their Gfx cards, the FPS dropped noticibly when you had more than 25 entities on the screen at once, and reached "low" when you had more than 75, low being roughly < 15 FPS)

both this laptop and my last one came with Vista (the old one came with the cheapest edition, this one has Business edition), but my experiences with this one are actually bearable.
Vista ran terrible on my old machine, once I gave it a second partition and installed XP, everything got better. MUCH BETTER.

Now, with a far more powerful comp however... Vista actually doesn't seem that bad (GASP!)

So what's the deal behind all the Vista hate?

(oh and by the way, I think that compatibility mode is fake. Try running TASClient in compatibility mode with XP, if you can get to the battle screen without TASClient locking up, you get a cookie.)

They installed Vista in out university 2 years ago, it made all the old computers hang (old = not dual core).

However, Windows 7 seems to be quite good.

just got a new comp w/ vista recently... i haven't had any concerns really (except for the fact that the new spring version doesnt work on it and i dunno wtf to do)

from my experience it's been people installing vista onto older hardware that have had the most problems

Had no problems with it whatsoever apart from a couple of incompatible drivers in it's early days.

If you have the hardware for it, vista runs like a raped ape. Windows 7 fucking screams comparitively. I about blew a load when windows 7 took a whole 15 seconds to boot up.

If your running vista, do the following:
  • Create a standard and admin account
  • Use the standard account for everyday things
Its reported that doing this can give you a speed boost of 15-25% depending on what your doing, because security checkups and virtualization that runs under admin accounts isnt needed under standard accounts. Any actions that need admin access wil pop up a little username and password dialog. This also makes for good security too against malware.

doesn't it just reboot and hibernate during the shutdown process?

Nah, on a laptop it hibernates a lot, but on a desktop it's an honest to god restart.

My PC running Vista takes around 5 minutes to load up, where as Windows 7 which I'm running in a VM on it, takes about 1 minute to load up.

It's fucking jungle beans I tell you.
