horrible sound effects in 0.79

Hi,
i just started playing new ver of spring (was away for 10 days). I noticed that sound has chaned from OK (0.78) to very bad in 0.79.
What happens is that after some time(14 mins in last game) in mutlipayer game sound effects start to produce some "eek" "peek" short sound distortions. Like it just plays first 0.1s of wav file insted of whole. I reduced max sound to 16 and did not solve it.
Beherith also said he gets same sound errors. In 5 minuts in single player with 3000 units i could not reproduce this error yet.
What could be wrong here? It is not my hardware as i had not probs in any games yet. I suspect new sound engine starts to malfunction after some time.

I get very distorted banisher and hlt sounds after a while. Especially when more of them fire at the same time. Never had an issue with .78

the ota sound need to be passed through a sound filter to get rid of bad frequencies that we cant hear, its not all the engine

Yeah, the new openAL system, although more powerful, definitely needs some tweaking.
My primary concern is that there is no sound 'clarity' at all. But I like the oomph of mass destruction like nukes etc.

I've noticed this happening with beam weapons where the sound repeats a whole bunch of times

You need to increase maxsounds, not decrease.

I just tried with max sound to 128 and its the same horrbile distortions. Its not only me as some now even play with disabled sounds to avoid ear damage

Can we go above the hardware supported amount and have the rest software emulated? I get a console warning about my Realtek ALC888 only supporting 28 concurrent sounds.

glad I am not the only one having sound problems with current version. by reducing some volumes in springsettings (battlevolume, master, maxsounds) i can a least play now, but still the sounds of dgun, peneratorlaser and commander-explosions are horribly loud compared to the rest. would be nice to have a message in #main that the problem is known and how o fix it if possible.

Next to any specific sound bugs, the (new) sounds seem to suck in general, it seems like someone is using some shitty reverb setting on all of them.
the ota sound need to be passed through a sound filter to get rid of bad frequencies that we cant hear, its not all the engine
so was ota using some freaky-deaky high sampling rate sound files? last I checked, the highest frequencies even cd's can have are ~22kHz, and I doubt these sounds are encoded in 44 kHz sound files.

+1. Shitty reverb and an 11k low pass filter.
Should be easy to fix though, just find the bad OpenAL setting.

I haven't heard anything that bad. What I have experienced was more like some of the samples were being garbled by radio static. This has only happened a couple times and was from swarms of T1 Kbots and vehicles in BA probably due to them being so packed together relative to the 3d sound field depending on camera position.
If the source files are all .wav someone could set some guidelines and Replaygain everything based on intended volume. With the new volume controls for unit replies and such it might not be necessary to differentiate volume at the source though. Everything could be set at 89db or whatever and then tweaked to individual preference in the settings.

Since no one's bothered to mention it, I will. This is an intentional feature in .79, I believe it can be disabled (but I don't know how).

No its a bug actually (not really a bug in spring, but in SDL). On non-windows platforms, it works as expected and mutes when minimized.
Also, the shitty reverb is actually in the wavs.

Could have sworn someone said it was intentional. They must have been joking

No, it is not. Listen to this comparison:

OK; not that reverb.
Check your sound settings (not in spring, in your OS and sound driver), and disable all reverb / environment effects (also surround upmix if you have).
