Textures, water, and crashes, oh my!

Greetings! Spring has never worked quite right for me, and I am only now capable of not crashing, installing it from the Fedora repository.

So far, the game looks pretty great (I do love a good RTS), but there's a few issues:

(1) Textures! My textures are whacky. They show up or disappear at seemingly random times for units and structures. For maps, they never show up. On maps such as Village Crossing, the "bushes" look like asterisks. Kernel Panic maps show a faint green on a pasty white background, rather than the black one they're supposed to have. This isn't a big issue, as gameplay is far more important than graphics, but I would like to get this fixed anyway.

(2) Water! I cannot seem to run any map (Aftershock, 2 Continents Remake) that features water. While this is avoidable, I would like to get this fixed most of all of my issues. Naval RTS is win.

(3) Crashes! I often crash at the start of the game if I do not select a special AI, such as C.R.A.I.G., Kernel Panic AI, or Chicken (I like chicken). Global Test AI works as well, but doesn't actually do anything.

(4)Bonus issue: music! The only game I get music on is Evolution, and this is only sporadic, and one track. While it's a nice track, I would like more music. This one is probably intentional, however. :(

Which game do you mean? Spring is just an engine.

The problem is, actually, your integrated graphics, as far as the textures and water go. You'll have to tweak those settings pretty low, and even then may suffer from slow-down.

As for AI crashes, I have no idea which work with the current version of Spring. Most of the games on Spring are intended for multiplayer use, primarily, and Skirmish AI are but supported to a limited degree.

The music is a matter of game or mod content. Most teams lack the time or expertise to provide soundtracks. S44 may add one in the future, and I was playing with some ideas for Kernel Panic, but... well.

Welcome!

I've tried running Spring under Linux, and the same integrated graphics chip that runs fine on Windows just doesn't go on Linux. So it may be an outright incompatibility.

Does it show the map texture white?
-> intel's driver suck even on windows, but on linux they suck even more ... (if it doesn't show the map texture, then there is no way to get spring running)

and most spring games don't feature music just start your favoured music player in the background ;)

neddiedrow: All games I've tried running.

jK: Yes, the textures are plain white.

Ah well, Gameplay is better than graphics. Thanks everyone for replying, and great job on the engine and the games.

Now make an ASCII version. :P
