you can grab tasserver from the downloads section and run it on one of your computers

To clarify, you'll need to run your own masterserver (tasserver). Connecting to a host on the same network in which you reside, but going through the main masterserver, is tricky.

for me, having a friend bring a comp with them and plugging into my router for a shared internet connection was enough; we join the main server and host a private game, no sweat, no added setup.
you could set up your own lobby server, but unless ping or the lack of an internet connection is the issue, connecting as you would normally should be less of a headache.

You need to download the latest version of the "tasserver.exe" (or whatever it's called ... I'm lazy) and put it in your spring folder. After that you run it, next go and open your spring client and in there somewhere you change what server you want to connect to: change it from "thedefaultTASserver" to "yourIPaddress", then connect, it should go "doong" and the little icon in the top left will turn green, everything is good, it's similar to creating a dedicated server ... or the same thing ... not sure ...
Edit: oh, and everyone else connects to that server too
It's how you play against bots also, which you can add in the MP battleroom.
