Spring RTS Engine

My window xp installation is going slower and slower, and a lot of things don't work anymore (the sound just stopped working, something with the drivers, and I can't fix it)

So I thought, maybe I could start using vista, or windows 7 (the new thing), but first I want some advice, should I go to vista, or stick with xp? and should I use 32, or 64 bit?

No antivirus, don't install bullshit games/programs, use firefox with noscript, use winamp v5.04 (from 2004) for music, VLC/classic media player for videos with combined community codec pack (google it).

Ehh the same argument against antivirus can generally be applied against software firewalls. Use a hardware one.

So instead of reinstalling you consider buying a new Windows?
XP is fine and I wouldn't switch to Vista when not necessary...

if you go to vista, get 64bit ultimate, it's the only version of vista that doesn't suck.

home premium is fine.

I have vista 64 ultimate on my main computer, recently installed it for the sake of curiosity. Still, I'd reinstall xp if windows 7 wasn't coming out in the near future. I have win 7 ultimate on my laptop - works decent so far. Had to manually get some drivers (default networking drivers failed for my setup), but fine otherwise. Uses about 550MB of ram with no major applications on, though.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned linux yet.

That said, you're best off reinstalling XP. Vista isn't horrible, but XP is definitely the superior gaming OS unless, of course, you need directX 10, etc. It also tends to be more stable than vista, especially with Spring-related apps.

Win 7 is pretty good, even my tiny Acer Aspire One netbook runs it smoothly with all the bells and whistles and shiny effects

I'm using Vista Business 32-bit right here, and well Spring runs fine (though unit icons dissapear are weird things like that happens).

I'm gonna upgrade to Windows 7 right away after it is released. Can't stand the long boot time of Vista.

Umm... The figure shows memory committed to processes afaik.

So, what's the advantage of 64 bit? is it possible to run 32 bit stuff on the 64 bit version, or not?

Most processes grossly overcommit; how much is actually in use?

You can use over 2.5-3.5GB ram, you can let 32-bit apps commit up to 4GB each, you can't run 16-bit apps any more, and 64-bit is the way of the future, where the support will likely be.

And I don't think I'll need 16 bit stuff, nothing I know of is 16 bit.

RAM, if you have 4 or more gigs of it you need 64bit processing. Other than that, it's mostly useless at the consumer level right now. There's a few mapping apps for spring that I think I recall benifited from 64 bit processing... but I can't think of any other process that needs it innately.

Vista ain't bad but if XP is running slow there's no way Vista is going to IMPROVE that situation. Reinstall XP or upgrade your computer to one designed for Vista.
