how do you get better rank... so far i'm stuck at level 1

Rank is based on time spent in a multiplayer game. The lowest rank (1 chevron, aka newbie) is 0 hours, while the highest (Silver star, aka veteran) is 1,000 hours. Single player games don't count, speccing counts 1/3rd time (I think). You can view your current time spent ingame by typing "/ingame" in the lobby.
