I'm interested.
I played the original CM and loved it. Haven't played Afrika Corps because I went and bought it when I was out of town and got home to find the dopey bastards hadn't put the disk in the box! I bought several other games at the same time including Medieval Total War 2 which basically kept me so occupied I didn't really care.
Anyway this is one time I feel completely justified and within my rights to download a game. Once I have it running I'll PM you some details.

It's not piracy if you own the game... I've torrented both Deus Ex and Rome: Total War because of lost/broken CDs.

im confused, these games are be FPSes or rts? the combat mission series i mean?
edit: never mind, they are kind of rts like but almost a tactical turn base game? they look kind of buggy in the videos of them however. are they any fun?

The original CM wasn't buggy, though the graphics were a little dated even on release. I don't know about the newer releases like AK.
Anyway, wikipeadia describes the gameplay as:
Turn-based/simultaneous execution
All three games share the same concept; turns are divided into a planning and an executing phase. While the planning phase can, in single player mode, last as long as the player needs to give orders to all his units, the executing phase always lasts 60 seconds of real-time. Both sides, either computer or another human enter their orders before the execution phase takes place. This is known as the Wego system. During the execution phase, units carry out their orders, but the player cannot influence the result and is limited to watch, replay and move the camera. All games offer to play individual battles (ranging from 15 to 60 turns, or 120 turns in CMBB and CMAK) or campaigns, linking a series of battles. See Scenarios below for more information.
As for whether it's fun - hell yeah! It goes for a very high level of realism so you really to to think about what you're doing. Charging a whole army directly into an enemy emplacement is suicide. The best part is your men realise it and completely freak out. Often they'll just find a nice comfortable ditch to hide in and wait until you give them orders that make sense. You really need to coordinate transport, covering fire, using cover, smoke, artillery and sneakiness to win. Most RTS are too fast paced to do any of this properly.
Anyway, I have AK downloaded now but I don't have time to play it today. Will PM when I'm ready to go. Sorry for the wait.

the planning stage is freaking awesome idea, but you can't jump in the action fps style i suppose, that would probably take away game play. some of the videos looked choppy but if they work on all those small tweaks it would be pretty fluid i would imagine.

Sounds like a problem with the video recording itself. The game is smooth. I've noticed the same thing on some of the Spring videos we're using for promotion. They make the game look like a lag-fest. Of course that could just be because the person recording it turned the graphics options up to an unplayable level.

So what do you have as proof?
I highly doubt you have the receipt so i'm guessing the box is your claim to owning it.
Not like you could just forge that terribly easily ;P

CD keys

Except when they print the CD Keys on the disc jacket.
I've lost a few that way because I put all my cds in a large storage case and the tacky little white jackets and jewel case inserts tend to get lost. Now I usually cut the key out and glue it to the manual but in a case like this where the disc isn't even in the box then neither is the key. I have the manual but the key isn't on it.

cracking and getting cd keys isnt great (apart from the legality) you cant play online on most games.
i like online play and i purchase all my games to play online so for me the cd key is vitally important (more so than the cd)

The only games ive ever downloaded have been games for consoles so i could play them on an emulator.
Whats the whole status on emulators and Roms?
Is it illegal to download them?

afaik all roms of commercial titles are illegal unless you own the original, you have 24 hours to delete them if you do not (this even applies to arcade emulators)
Though i doubt the legailty of having roms even if you own the game.

So they allow you to keep the game for 23hours 59mins before it becomes illegal?
So no one will do anything anyway sort of like, OTA, with spring?
