i have never done 3d modeling before and i am just wondering if blender is a suitable 3d moddeling tool for Ubuntu, and if not are there any better alternatives?
if it matters at all im using ubuntu 8.4HH

yes, though its interface takes some getting used too. I recommend running through some some of the tutorials on the official site to get used to it.

Wings 3D is much easier to start with, and much more suitable to modelling for Spring imo.

I agree. Wings is much easier to get the hang of and has excellent uv mapping software. The only downside is wings lacks some of the features blender does like normal map generation but you could always use
this.

Blender is capable of importing from wings3D. Or wings is capable of exporting to Blender (i am not sure which way does it work).

Really? I've been stuck having to use an indirect method to get models from one to the other. I'd be glad if you could divulge to me the process through which one may directly transfer models from one to another.
Thanks!

That is what I meant by "indirect method."

How much more direct could you get? Wings imports/exports .obj, so does blender.

I wanted to export .wings from Blender, or .blend from Wings.

just use .obj. its *exactly* the same number of steps.
when you have to use a 3rd program to change it from a blender readable file to one wings can read, then you can complain. until then, suck it up and stop being so lazy.

I use OBJ as it is, and I'm not BAAAAW-ing, only complaining.
My only problem with obj is that I need to export each mesh separately, but I'll live.

bzzt. wrong. if you are doing blender->wings you can do it all in one, then separate the meshes when you get into wings.

I'm going to weigh in to say, that I agree, wings is probably more suited for spring modeling (which is generally very simple). If you plan on modeling more complicated stuff later, it'll be nice to have blender under your belt, wings is much more a last generation modeling suite.
