New Computer Post (2-9-2009)

First off... Yes I am trying to brag, but I boast not for myself, I boast in the Lord... because there is no way I would have had the kind of last 6 months I've had and be making a post like this if it weren't for an all powerful being who loves me...

(Those who do not believe in a supreme being may attribute this to innate social networking abilities, "The Secret" (I've been wanting a new computer so long the Universe found a way for me to have it), or just gal-darned good luck, or Karmic Rebound for working in a call center for 5 years, and then being a good husband and taking the baby at nights so my wife could sleep...I'm sure it's one of those and I happy to give God credit)

Second, God doesn't promise free computers...

Anyways, guy I know from church decided to clean out his basement so I am now the proud owner of a AMD 64bit 3700 series CPU computer with 1.5 GB of RAM(with heat sinks), and an nVidia 128MB 6600 video card with 120GB SATA2 hard-drive in an Premium Alienware Full Tower case... and a pile of other various stuff like a fancy Ergonomic Microsoft Keyboard and a good old 3 button mouse and a second monitor so I can do dual monitor again.

Not the top of the line, mind you, but significantly better then my prior system (which says a lot).

And just last week a friend of mine was cleaning out his appartment and gave me an 8 port 100 megabit switch.

And the church I live next to and attend set up free public wireless access point.

And my best friend moved back to town, and the bus strike ended...

It came with a faulty floppy drive(disconnected now... who needs them with USB boot anyways?) and an undiagnosed spontaneous blue screen problem... but I think the latter was the Creative Audigy 2 sound card it had so I've pulled it out and activated the onboard audio chipset and it seems to have resolved the issue so far.

Also it didn't have a DVD burner so I had to harvest that from my old rig.

Also... did I mention I got a new job and no longer work in a Call Center? I'm developing Database Applications in Access on Short Term Contracts now, which, while there may be naysayers about Access, is actually a programming job... and I dropped out of college after 2 years of failing programming courses.

I don't know why, but that post feels inspiring. A triumph over adversity?

Images added... yeah... inspiring? chance of hope even in the minute details that are the real reason life is so hard... not just the big tragic stuff.

I think I might be able to play GalCiv2 without having to first Zoom all the way out to tactical/icon display.

i have more coke cans and empty beers over beside my mousepad... my suggestion for a more complete setup, you have a lot of clutter, but not much filth... try not to clean up often, it will add more character to the work area. may i also suggest moving in a second desk and setting up old stereo equipment on top of it... even file cabinets have lots of space on top that can then be filled with all sorts of crap... look at all that wasted space on top of the black monitor!

the black monitor is only a few days old, hasn't had a chance to absorb any junk

also... that mess is in my living room... I'm lucky my wife hasn't beheaded me yet.

bah... maybe that's okay for Televisions but for a PC I'll stick with my CRTs... even the "full flat" CRT I have bothers me a bit.

why does it bother you?

it just feels wrong to not have my screen kinda "fisheye" out at me for some reason... also it's takes like 10 seconds longer to wake up after going into powersleep... so it might just be that.

I don't like LCDs for an entirely different reason then I don't like full flat CRTs... LCDs have a native resolution and any difsplay other then that looks like crap (with the exception that if the LCD's resolution is high enough to compensate... like on my laptop.)
