Freezes during game play

Windows XP
AMD 3500+
During game play, always happens once, that my computer, kind of, crashes(freezes with the same image), then I have to change to another window with ALT+TAB and then come back to game to put it working again and continue playing. It's like my PC starts working with 1 frame per 5 seconds. If I dont do this procedure (ALT+TAB), the game never comes back working again.
The consequences of this is normaly losing like 40 seconds of game play while ALT+TAB-ing (it takes time).
Does anybody knows how I can fix this to not get interrupted all the time?
I hate to have to do this when I'm beeing spammed..
