Heard of 0 AD ? I'd say like Glest on Steroids ...

... but that might be an understatement

.
Anybody been following
0 AD? I was never quite sure if they meant to release it as open source or not (as I didn't quite get why they hadn't already, if it was to be). But from the sound of that thread, they will be.
If you have a look at their Screenshots and stuff, it looks to me like it could be one awesome game (by open source standards in any case, hard to judge by commercial standards without being able to play it :D). Maybe I can put the "Libre" game to rest soon

(well, my part in it anyway...).
Well, I'll be interested in their first release, in any case.
Regards Sean

Now only you know? I've been following 0AD before I found spring.
And I don't think it is like Glest on steroids, Glest is on medieval-era with magic blended into it, while 0 AD is completely historical (?) and is focused on "the era before medieval

"

Like? (besides Spring)

Yeah Gota, spill the beans!
Well of course in a way Glest is not too different from Spring either, but I thought Glest and AD 0 are far more similiar (close up view, Warcraft3/Age of Mythology like feel [not that I've ever played the later..], geared for close combat).
Also I guess I was talking about the Engine as much as the content (I bet you could do the Historic game on Glest, or (perhaps more difficult) a Fantasy game on the AD 0 Engine. I mean, I think I saw an "Alien invasion" mod for Glest (and apparently by the "official" devs : P)!

It would seem your not quite clear on the meaning of free as in opensource/libre ... that appears to be freeware your talking about, which is nice as well, but something different.

Yeah, your right that perticuler one is not open source..
But there are other open source games as well.
There out there just like spring...unknown,unadvertised...and if a website is not in english than you wont hear about the game unless its released and is so good that people drop everything else to play it.

Die Verbotene Welt seems to be cool though, too bad no multiplayer.

All there is to download on moddb is
a mac application to get news from 0 A.D.. So I guess that my initial feeling is right, they're building a vaporware, not an actual game.

No, it's not released yet, sorry. Thought that was clear from my first post, but I guess not. Be sad if it did turn out to be vaporware - but when I first saw the project (half a year ago), my judgement (especially seeing their timeplaning, and how they had originally planned to release long ago) had been exactly that :/.
Though I guess there's the chance now, that if they give up on they'll at least release what they've made so far...

I do not like when amateur mod/game makers set timelines for complete. Most of the time they are hobbyists and cannot make those scheduals.

Epic Rez, but i was just checking up on them again, and they seem to have gone all out Open-source a month ago!
Games not finished apparently, but at least they're not letting it go to waste :D.
Will look into it some more now

Are the developers aware that there was no year "0" AD?

They mention Spring on the open source page! Cute.
They've been in development since 2001 so I don't hold out much hope for a proper release any time soon, but I certainly don't doubt their dedication. Impressive amount of work.
