Spring RTS Engine

i have a few friends that would like to older (XP era) FPS games and was wondering if any one had suggestions. we did play SW battle front but that got kind of boring due to its repetitive and basic game play, while games like Battle Field 2 (and mods) with all the squad orders and vehicle support seemed to be more favorable.

some one mentioned one of the tribes game was free and had a few good mods, so maybe ill try that out too.

i would really like to expand into LAN Spring play but unfortunately some players find RTS games to be boring and desire more fps action. but maybe i can slowly ween them into it. i know they don't mind space combat simulators, so maybe ill try the mechwarrior games as well...

anyways, my main point was: what are some good idea for LAN play, not brand new, FPS games that are not really redundant (i know some might think all fps's are)?

I-War 2: Edge Of Chaos has good multiplayer.
Mech4 Mercs w/ the mektek mechpacks is good.
IronStorm (i think thats the name of the game, alternate future WW1 still raging in 1960)
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
UT or UT2003

ofc all of these require piracy unless you happen to own the game

i think ill definitely try that

the iron storm looks like it has a cool style, but might be too repatative shoot em up, ill read some more about it.

maybe i should mention that the more team play is involved it seems the more fun the players have, since free-for-alls always leave some one angry on the bottom. (and we tend to drink and play)

i war 2 looks interesting but i cant find much information on its multiplayer game play

UT, yes we all played UT i should dig around for a copy of that. dont know about ut2004 tho, but it looks like vehicles where included and might be pretty fun

I also totally like playing Quake 1 on lan, but the visuals will make most people shudder.

edit: UT2004 (or 3?) where there are vechs is real fun, i vote +1 for that.

warsow's special move function remind me of an old half life 1 mod called "the specialist" which was really fun to play back in the day before steam. you could freeze/ slow time and dodge bullets, super jumps and all kinds of crazy matrix rip off kung fu moves

Assuming gfx aren't am issue, I'd really recommend Rainbow 6: RogueSpear/Blackthorn. Very fun on LAN with a few people, drinking or not, though probably not for heavy drinking. Also, make sure it's on hardest difficulty.

bana you should look of the quake engine enhancements. Tenebrus and darkplaces are pretty nice.

Sven Coop (requires HL), Warsow, Nexuiz, Spring.

Specialists is a fun mod, but it's not the best LAN mod. It's pretty complicated and difficult for new players.

Tribes 2 and UT (1) are the general favourites at my uni compsci society lans.

If they think RTSes are too slow and boring grab Arena Wars, that's an RTS that's very close to an FPS.

Try Tremulous. It's based on the GPL'd Quake 3 engine. From the web-site:

Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS.

One team is humans (they use guns) and the other team is the aliens (they use mostly melee attacks). The goal is to kill the enemy base so that your enemies cannot respawn. Each team has a builder/engineer class which can repair the base, make defenses, etc...

Serious Sam is win! It's perfect for if you don't want to think for a while and do crazy things

Seriously though: Halo 1 CE + modding tools. Provided you're all creative enough, it never gets old.
