Mission scripts are borked in current Spring version?

Did something change so that mission scripts don't work in the current version? Is this intentional? If so, what is the appropriate way to create missions now?
In 0.76b1, it was possible to add lua scripts to the "startscripts" directory, but doesn't seem to work in the current Spring version?
