Starting positions (fixed=random) & map.smd overriding

Summary:
  • - "random start positions" = "fixed start positions"
  • - overriding map.smd in map.sd7 no longer works

Details:

Hello,

I lured a few friends to Spring and they like this game just as much as me :) They are newbies of course and a bit afraid to play big games against human players. So for the time being we are playing in team against an AI team to learn the mechanics and to familiarize with the available units and buildings.

AI players still ignore starting boxes. What I previously did was extracting the map.smd file from the map.sd7, place it beside the map.sd7, modify the starting positions and host a game for all of us. This was easy because only the host had to have this modified map.smd file. But now it seems that the map.smd is not read anymore or at least does not override the settings of the map.smd inside the map.sd7 anymore.

So we tried "random start positions" but that had no effect at all. All human and all AI players where placed according to the "Order" column (in TASClient) and the "fixed start positions" defined by the map. So currently there is no difference between fixed and random start positions.

Modifying the map.smd inside the map.sd7 is the only option I found so far but it messes up our map sync for normal games and it's cumbersome to upload (depends on map size of course...).

Anyone has another idea how to define starting positions when trying to team up against an AI team?

On a side note: KAIK has become a surprisingly good spammer and metal spot grabber - combined with AAI's urge for T2 the games are very interesting at the beginning and not too bad in the long term :)

Marc
