Umm.... you guys played BZ2 before??? (BattleZone 2)
we need to make cockpits for the units, or at least the popular units to pilot, even if they are just overlaid images on the screen like old school doom .... it would add SOOOOOO much to the FPS aspect its not even funny....
then you could, when the engine is STABLE! lol.... put 8 guys on a team, 7 pilots 1 commander! say 50 max units... each pilot has a squad of like 3 tanks....

yeah the GUI are gonna be edited at some point to make cool lookiing cockpits (but that was said AGES ago, may not be true)

That would BE COOL! Also im rather Exited right now cause i found out about a new game Will Wrigth (read:God) is makeing. Spore proves to be not only a awsom game, but just so damn cool it will make your head EXPLODE! Check out the movie at GMCTC (you need to sighn up, but just give a fake adress, tehy dont send you anything)
See, Spore is a massive game. Its big. Really Big. Really Really Really big! Its just so flipping HUGE its hard to imagin. You start out a a little protazo and then you squirm throuhg the microscopic muck that is the begining enviroment. Right now it looks... LIKE THIS!
See the creture! That was never desinged by a 3D designer, nor was it animated. No, when Will Wright created it with an in game editor (Think the sims mixed with MR.Patato head mixed with clay), the game looked at its strucutre and said 'This is how it moves'! Its a dynamicaly created movement animator that will do anything with anything! So as WW moved his critter around, eathing little food pelets and avoiding preditors he eventualy layed an egg (in game). Then he clicked on the egg and the game went back to the edditor...
There he gave his critter a spike on the head, makeing it cut through the ozze faster and it was able to spear through enemy's!
Then he skipped to when his creture became MULTI-cellular! Now the game was in 3D!!!!!!!!!! and the creture moved realisticaly, flapping its hands and swiming about! After another generation WW then made his creture into a tri-pod, compleat with a grabber on hte back of its tail.
The creture now gimped around on three legs, useing a dynamicaly created anaimation for its body!
Then WW showeed how subsiquent generations of cretures could get bigger and bigger brains, so they eventually become sentint! Now the game is like an RTS, where you controll a little tribe. WW put down a spear rack, and the cretures looked at the spears in wonder, before gabbing them with their tails! The game figures out WHITCH limb would be the best for carrying itemes and interacting with things!
Now skip forward and the tribe became a town. Then the town became a city, and interacted with different citys. Then the citys built star ships and traveled to other planets in the solor system. Then the ships got intersetller drives and flew a myriade of star systems.
Once you understand the massiveness of this game, you will have spontanious head explosions! i DID!

er, couldn't the feature to put overlays on the screen be implemented as well as being able to control stuff in fps mode, thus anyone who wishes to can make a battlezone mod in the spring engine

while here is a non-sentinet Tripod fleeing a preditor (another cool feture of Spore is that when ever you make something, its atoumaticaly uploded to every single other person playing spore, so your cretures populate their universers and flesh out the eco-systems of their worlds)

If you want to see unit behaviour/dynamic created from the look/structure of the unit check out the "old old old spring" on the download page. That was exactly how that worked :)

I totally agree this is an excellent idea - given the fact that FPS is the most popular game genre there should be plenty of pilots out there - the only question is whether they'd be happy following orders from the likes of us =)
Actually come to think about it, how do they recieve orders in the first place? I guess if you clicked on a unit that was piloted by a human and gave it e.g. a move order, you'd want the pilot to be able to see a minimap with the location he's got to get to on it, and I guess it might be nice if the path finding algorithm put some waypoints on the map for him?

How can you not? Spore is ANOTHER piece of evidence that i have been collecting for a LONG time. PC games are flat out BETTER then consoles, and unless consoles are more computer like, then that will ALWAY'S be true!

This is my dream game. A game where you controll a guy in fps mode while a commander gives you orders in rts mode... And in mordern/postmodernd combat to...
Anyway, could be VERY fun. Could make a mod, so it dosent disturb regular gameplay. Like, for every 4 kills you get a ''peewees'' worth of lengt and 1 more in damage or something. And when on hig ground, you get MUCH more range.(then before) and like stuff like that.

Is it only me that seen that rare WAR OF THE WORLDs strategy game? It was very cool. (gotta get it from my pal-.-*)
And the soundtrack was awesome, with music AND the story of WOTW in a same mix! I got the whole 90 minute file....

its been done dude.... back in like 98' never got popular though.... took too much computer back then to make it worth a crap.. fun game still

you actually play as a PILOT... you can pilot anything you can see
you can go into buildings.... change settings on what guns go on what units...
command units to build stuff...
go into the comm center and use the top down view.... but if someone kills you in the comm center... or kills the comm center alltogether,.. you a-die, b- are no longer in top down :-p.... you can build base stuff.. units, mines, power grids... bombers... tanks... more pilots... you name it...
it was a pretty kickass game back in the day... it had some issues with various bugs in multiplayer that never REALLY got fixed though...
I've been waiting very impatiently for BZ3

First-person shooter + RTS + evolving aliens (a bit). Highly recommended. It's a half-life mod. In this case, the rts/fps crossover was achieved by utterly hacking the RTS elements into the venerable Half-Life FPS engine- a work of genius. Playing it gives you an idea of how commander and commandee interact in that situation. I'd love to see Spring get an FPS mode that sophisticated one day, but it might be a pretty big project to make it play like a FPS engine.
