Spring RTS Engine

Since I don't see many congratulatory posts being made, I figured I'd express my sincere awe and gratitude to the makers of the Spring engine, and for the mod-makers surrounding it...especially considering how wonderful the new version/versions (heh) are doing now on my Ubuntu machine. Textures are more vibrant, fps is significantly higher, and the effects were upgraded. And all this on a sorry Nvidia MX4000, which I hope to one day decommission once I get a job in this lousy economy. I especially can't wait for the newest versions of CA to take advantage of this engine's performance. The other mods, let's face it, are also deserving of our thanks and applause. Truly, you mod-makers and coders are worthy of praise and perhaps even 6 digit salary figures. Hey, this is excellent work. Congrats!

I think that's due to users not really noticing the guys behind the repos. I mean, the website tells you who maintains it, but that's about it. If you were going to thank that guy, you'd also have a huge bunch of other people to thank (devs, support, whatever). It's too much. So in the end, people take it for granted. I myself rarely thank devs that give something to me (except if its directly related to me, like my bug report being fixed) but this does not mean that I'm not thankful. I just choose not to express my gratitude formally. Lots of folks probably think the same way.
I myself also contribute to the Wine project by maintaining a few apps. Never have I seen anyone thank me for it. But you know what? I don't care. I do it for myself, for future reference. Helping others is just a side-effect of that

Indeed the spring engine, and some of its community is really cool. Sometimes when i read things on the forum, i really think many of us sell it short.

I am proud to be a user of the engine. And i do thank all the people do hard work for us all.

The community really needs to grow up though.

Yeah it's kinda cool since there are like 40 other Scott Ritchies but I'm like 8/10 of the links on the front page of Google.

okay questions

1) why cant certain packages be updated independently of ubuntu releases. im thinking mainly of eclipse; ganymede is the most current one (3.4) but repos only have 3.2. considering how much work is done between eclipse releases it seems insane not to continuously update it.

2) spring's repo needs an actual cert; i freak out a little every time it says WARNING ABOUT TO INSTALL UNAUTHENTICATED PACKAGE in my update manager.

Springlobby from the ubuntu 8.04 LTS doesn't have the bittorrent features either. How much work is it to add lobtorrent-rasterbar, or use ubuntus libtorrent for LTS users? It is a long term support version of Ubuntu, it would be nice if spring can support it for a longer time too.

The whole point of an Ubuntu release is for it to:
1) Not break after upgrading from a previous release
2) Not break until the next upgrade

Changing major versions can do this sometimes. Sometimes newer software is backported (especially if you enable the backports repository), but other than that things need to stay stable.

This is one reason why Ubuntu has such a quick release cycle - if you update every 6 months, the amount of time users don't have the latest can be minimized. This is especially true when releases are timed around Ubuntu - x.org and Gnome, for instance, release every 6 months just in time to make the next Ubuntu release.

It's supposed to do that because it's not an official package provided from the Ubuntu repository.

You don't get this warning when downloading Wine from my apt server because the first step is to add my key to your "system keys". There's no way to do this with launchpad ppa's at the moment, and because of the huge collaboration advantage we've had I don't see any reason to move away from it and go to a separate setup like Wine.

I spent about 20 hours on the project before moving on to other things. The libtorrent-rasterbar packages simply don't cleanly import to Hardy.

It's doable, but I'm not sure it's worth it at this point, at least for me. If det wants to bring libtorrent-rasterbar into the ppa for Hardy I'd be happy to tell him what I found (namely that we also need to backport Intrepid's newer debhelper as a build requirement).

What does cleanly mean, exactly? That it will cause bugs for many hardy users? I got the springlobby version working by installing a rasterbar .deb file, and stripping out the binary from a springlobby .deb file and it worked. Maybe a little fiddling, i don't remember correctly. I was chatting with braindamage at the time, and he was suprised that it worked, as the .deb files weren't made for ubuntu.
Braindamage was a little annoyed that Ubuntu didn't have the torrent, and he though you were too obsessed with using some manner of making the .deb files. The repo just sends .deb files, no? (I am not sure if i am saying this correctly here)
Anyway, i think i will just try compile the newest lobby versions, and get the lobby that way, because i don't really feel like the hassle of upgrading ubuntu.

Launchpad won't accept binary uploads to a PPA, it needs a source package that it can then build.
