Sum it up for me!

I heard about Spring from a dude at my college, checked it out, and being a fan of SupCom, Starcraft, etc, I had to try it out. It's free!

However, I'm I feel like I'm really late to the game, and I was hoping someone could fill me in.

Where are we at as far as the Spring mods are concerned, What's new? What's old? Where's the game going? How long before it moves on? Nobody talks in the lobby.

I have this habit of finding cool games that are the end of their life cycle, and I like growing with a community rather than being the newbie all the time.

Fill me in. Thanks!

This is a remake of the original game (engine?) Total Anhilation

There are several mods the main being Complete Anhilation and Balanced Anhilation..

For some reason BA and CA have alittle bit of a fanboy battle going on but dont worry too much about that..

You are going to be pwned pretty hard starting off..

Build A Light lazer tower in your base so you dont get weasel spammed.

Watch replays and listen to peoples advice.

Also I would advise you to Spectate a few games to find out how everything works.

There is a large community still active.

Depends on your GMT if you can find games..

Also try logging onto the different lobby host..

there should be about 20 / 100 people online at any given time.

How old is the Spring Mod?

What's the news?

I hate it when I pick up an older game, and little do I know that the community is actually waiting for an expansion or something, and I'm oblivious until after it comes out.

So ya, what are you guys are waiting for?

Spring is an engine, not a game, on the engine games can be created (content) There is no main mod, well, alot of people play BA, but ah.

Games like IW and pure are in the works and people hope they will stop the domination of *A mods (check the games and mods forum).

Also, Lumpy: Congratulations on your first post without tolling! Yay

Some mods are being improved constantly, like CA, and people who play then are always waiting for the next and better version :) Some mods arent, like BA, and people who play then seen to be satisfied with what they have.

There are also some promissing mods being made, such as P.U.R.E

A new version just came out but it's still buggy now. There is lot's of experienced players but there is also always a handfull of newbies.

If you're a good rts player you should be able to match most other players in a quite short time.

Try different mods and don't get locked on one.

What's IW?

So let me get this straight.

Spring engine basically replaces the engine in TA with a newer engine. The mod packs replace units and game styles and so forth, right?

So Supreme Commander is on a different engine, and the developers of the Spring Engine don't really mess with anything that can't work with TA?

The goal of the engine dev's has nothing to do with ta, it has to do with making a good (rts) engine.

Now there are a few mods which use the ta content like BA and CA, so it's like ta, but the engine devs have nothing to do with ta, they just make the engine(which can be used for diffrent things than ta).

Oh well now that really has me confused.

So what dictates what games can be played using the Spring Engine?

Actually, what I should say is "do I need TA or any of the other games in order to use the Spring Engine?"

Nothing.

Engine devs work on the engine, that has nothing to do with content (units, ect)

Content devs work on creating content for the engine, (units, ect)

So an engine is basicly a program that can do things, like display units, content devs make the units and more, and engine devs increase the capabilities of the engine.

How old is the Spring Mod?
Hence why we should refer to it as 'spring engine' rather than 'spring' in official media and advertisement.

Do I need Total Annihilation to use the Spring Engine?

No, but if you do not already own a copy of Total Annihilation and download and play TA based mods such as BA then you're entering into a legal quagmire

Analogy!

Imagine spring is a virtual video-game, the mods are the CDs with games you "put" into spring and play.

Ok, so while I don't require TA, I do need to download the actual games, like BA, Pure, ect? Or do I play them over TASClient?

When I click on "spring.exe" I get "needed extension GL_ARB_Texture_env_combine not found".

Ok, so I figured out the downloader and how to get CA.

Can I use the downloader to get other games? It shows CA in the modules tab.

It will autodownload any game/mod/map in a game you join (exept when the file isnt availible, becaus it isnt published, but you shouldnt worry about that.)

PHeller I got a feeling your computer is not compatible with Spring...nevermind.

Let's just say Spring is an engine, ok? Do you know what is an engine? ( OF COUSRE YOU KNOW) OK. Think of it as a car engine. Besides an engine, cars also need one more think to power it. Fuel. (That's basic, LOL) Without fuel, an engine is just a useless hulk of metal. And fuel represents mods or games. So, the engine (Spring) runs on fuel (Mods, games, etc.)

This game is completely open-source and free. Thanks to that, we could revolutionize RTS gaming! (just kidding, though there is potential) You have no need for other third-party files (except some LUA stuff, and well, mods). To sum it up, read my manual I and Crayfish put it up together. It is not really complete, though. It is missing a Lua section, and the technical troubleshooting part is a stub.

Welcome to Spring by the way.
