Spring RTS Engine

Everytime I start TASclient, springdownloader asks permision to to whatever, I give it and then it crashes.

I am running vista 64 if that helps at all. Is there anything that I could check to see if I can get more information to you guys?

The spring installer after it completes complains that the program was not intended to run on this machine. None of the prior installers did this.

Don't you install to a folder not in program files? Spring downloader shouldn't be asking you with a UAC prompt if this is the case since those privilledges are not needed! bugfix!!!

yeah I install to a separate harddrive all together.

that isn't helpful and it an pointless thing to say. I ran spring before the newest release on vista 64 just fine. Posting derpa derp vista sucks derp diddly derp derp does not help the developers. They need relevant feedback beyond popular hatred for an OS.

If you know somewhere that I can look into to find more info and/or a way to check for other settings to give the devs better feedback be my guest. Otherwise don't bother replying again hoi.

What was the cause of your problems btw? I also run SD on vista 64 and it worked. Except tasclient could not start it.

not sure, but it was something with the app/installer. I am not sure what they changed.

No it isn't. If the application is properly set up to handle being in Program Files, then this wouldn't be happening.

Easy solution, install to some other location, like c:/spring

It should only ask for a UAC prompt when the encessary privilledges are required, hence when it tries to write to the disc and cant because it lacks the access rights.

According tot eh microsoft 7 engineering blog one of the reasons UAC was introduced was to encourage developers to stop assuming administrator rights and code for standard users, hence drastically reducing the UAC prompts, increasing compatibility, and vastly increasing system security.

But obviously springdownloader is set up to demand full system access rights at start up regardless of what it actually needs.

well, whatever they changed, the crash is fixed so I am happy.

I think the problem is - SpringDownloader asks for UAC permissions, since it expects itself to be in program files and needs to modify files there.

And TasClient does not ask for this permission so it cannot run SpringDownloader.

hey man, I argued against assuming that it would be run anywhere, users like me isolate the os from the games.

I have them on two separate partitions.

I have Spring on a seperate harddrive altogether also, not had any problems though.

latest auto update exe includes a manifest ...
