I hate old computers!

My brother in law wanted to use my laptop, so now i'm stuck with a P1 66mhz 8mb ram, that hardly ruuns internet explorer. In fact, it crashes every time I wan't to visit this forum! So I decided to fire up telnet and to connect to some unix shell (cyberspace.org) and use lynx from there, so now I'm actually able to post. Don't you just hate it? Sorry for my poor s^pelling, but the damned Win95 telnet client shows every letter i type twice, so i cant get a damned overview of my message.

I think its time for you to think about upgrading your hardware. You
can goto
http://www.pricewatch.com . You can get a mother
board, CPU, memory, case and video card for under $200 .
You can even get a nice Dell for around $400 .... also HP ..
Gateway ... has deals ... You might even find good deal right
noe ...

The problem isn't that he needs an upgrade I gather. Its that his brother has his computer, so he dragged the only other one around out of the trashbin and fired it up to try to keep posting. So essentially this is a thread of moaning.
I feel for ya michilus (not that this has ever happened to me). What were the specs on your laptop?

By the way.... If you want it for gaming... dont get dell, tiny, time, gateway, or any of those sort of ones... Find someone that knows what there doing and get them to make it if you don't know yourself...
Shudders at the mention of crap computer companies...

The specs on my laptop: P4 2.8 ghz 512mb ram, so the transition was kinda harsh. O well, I'll probably have him back the day after tomorrow, so no harm was done. I learned one thing though: forums look BAD in text only browsers:-)

Kinda harsh?

What was it like waiting for windows to start up after all this time with a faster computer and faster OS? I often forget how fast my computer starts until I see one that is actually slow.

ofcourse if your were running linux on that old machine.... you would not have had the slowness problem, as you could install a very basic gui that didn't hammer the pc. (windows sux however i still use it.... dam)

Perhaps you should try using putty instead of defacto telnet, much more useful...
Ahk, this computer I'm on now si the nearest one to the phoneline, aka in range of my wifi router and close enought o connect ADSL without extension wires, and ahk it's a windows 98 SE install thats not got an install cd, thus I cant install ym wifi hardware or my modems or even connect my router up, there's no ethernet interface and the onyl outgoing itnerface is a usb 56k modem. Aside from having a 14" monitor in 256 colours runnign at 640x480 on a graphics card capable of so much more, 20GB hd and 1.4ghz amd duron, I think it's seen better times. My laptop has started refusing to boot form hardrive so I cant finish windows installation, and my perfectly fine computer is too far away to connect to the wifi router, even though ti should, the signals crappy up there. And I cant even install things on this comp ahk. If I take an extension cable and try to dial out form upstairs I get topld off and my parents try to take my wires.... *No internet in the bedrooms*

Well, yeah, my laptop is running at lightspeed compared to this one. But at the end, it's just getting used to: I'm actuallly getting quite good at textual browsing, and did I mention I used to play TA on this machine? Without Core Contingency of course, since that would fill up my 518 mb HD.It actually ran smoothly at speed 3 with a unitlimit of 200. Watchin a nuke detonate was suicide, though...

Wow, TA on 66 mhz. Weren't the listed minimum requirements 100mhz with 16megs ram? Though it was speed three. Yet another reason TA was so great, it scaled to your computer specs, even if they were less than minimum.

My laptop doesnt even have the 66hz and it runs OTA ok, on -5 speed.
Core Contingency and it dies...

Rejoice! I've got my laptop back, and it looks like a mean bad ass machine right now! Yay!
