about how CPU's bottleneck certain GPU's.
At the moment I have an e6300 clocked at the stock 1.866GHZ.
I also have a 7900GTO.
Im planning to buy a radeon 4870.
would my CPU 'bottleneck' my GPU? Would it even make a huge difference (15fps) if i were to buy an e8400?
Or should I just OC?

Spring is cpu limited, but not for spring, to get the maxium out of your gpu, you should have a compreable cpu.

I have no idea, but I can tell you that E8400 + radeon 4850 is damn fast.

I have an athlon X2 4400+ and a 7800GTX, I run spring on high settings, and my FPS will slow down long before the game simulation slows down. I cant ever recall being in a (multiplayer) game and having my CPU cause the simulation to slow, but FPS does (a bit) towards the end of really big games.

With the dual-core Althon X2 6000 and a GeForce 9800GTX, I only see major framerate hits if I turn everything up to 11, and then, it really is the GPU. But I have to have ridiculous settings on, pretty much.
On my personal box, the 7800 is not sufficient to run the most complex scenes without a little slowdown, and certainly can't handle dynamic water or shadows without a major performance hit. That said, framerate is rarely below 60 in the current Spring, unless something major is happening on the CPU end.

Your CPU and GPU are in constant comunication, if the CPU can't get data to the GPU fast enough, you lose framerates, and vice versa, if the GPU can't get data to the CPU fast enough you lose frame rates. The problem with spring is that it uses a huge ammount of CPU resources in pathfinding, AI, unit tracking, resource management, physics simulations, and other factors like view radius. Combined with the fact that spring is a single threaded application (you don't gain much advantage using a multicore processor with it) spring tends to be a game that has MASSIVE CPU requirements at a baseline before your GPU has even gotten any information in the frame. The CPU is delayed in saying "This is my game state GPU, what does it look like on screen?" and therefore the GPU doesn't work as hard as it's capable of.

Ahh, well I know that much Swift. Especially about spring/rts being quite the CPU humping bastards
But I think i'll rephrase. If a GPU is being bottlenecked by a low end CPU, when buying a 'competent' CPU, is there a sudden surge of better performance. Becuase for MOST games, the sudden surge of performance will come directly from upgrading your GPU.
So to rephrase, Would having an e8400 + 4870 be like atleast 25-40% faster than an e6300 + 4870.
Edit: blaah. nvm. mods can lockanddelete...
