MAC EXPANSION!

I'm pretty new here and I love this game. As far as advertising for the game goes it was a miracle I found it in the first place. A great way to bring potentially hundreds of new people to join the community would be to sign up on the developers page. after that you can put this project on the main downloads page of apple. Which Is the first stop for browsing mac users. Due to the terms and conditions you can not advertise AA but you could advertise Kernel panic and other mods not reliant on Total annihilation.

I haven't done this yet because...
1. None of the complete legal games have independent sites.
2. I would like to promote the games as such, running on the engine.
3. Macintosh support is tenuous at best.
I will do this, however, if support for Intel Macs is confirmed and somebody agrees to maintain such for 77b1. I plan to advertise Expand & Exterminate, Evolution RTS, Fibre and Kernel Panic via this method.

And what exactly would be your definition of complete?
Just because we plan to add more content doesn't mean the game isn't complete. The moment I stop adding more content is probably the same moment that I stop updating it.
It has all the things you need for the game. Just because I'm making things more spiffy in the future doesn't mean that the game isn't complete.

this is the most important point, if the engine cannot even run (skim over the mac thread and count number of people who succeeded), the point of having available mods is secondary

If it did run and we did not have viable content, we would be in the same situation. The content end matters more to me because it affects the situation of advertisement on all operating systems.

We could always advertise spring for the PS3, not that we have a working engine for it.

I wouldn't advertise a PS3 title on the PS3.

yea.
Additionally, theres few reasons why there is Iinux support but no proper mac support yet:
1: While macs are about as popular as Linux in the general population, macs are *much* less popular than Linux among developers. Consequently, no real mac maintainer.
2: Due to certain dumb system design issues (mandatory bundles for gui apps, etc) it does not appear possible to just make cross-builds that work (without having a mac), unlike normal BSD + X + Gnome.
I have an intel mac, but its mac mini with intel integrated graphics card. Spring doesn't work, opengl crash. I doubt it'd get good framerate with such card even if i'd fix it. I did fix springlobby to work on mac, though, and i think it would still build fine. Sometime i'll try to make normally distributable mac build of springlobby (apparently you cant just copy libs into bundle and be done with it).

I get a crash with my MacBook. Shame.
Any idea whats causing the crash? Is it the underlying openGL library thats causing the issue?
I'm spending some of my spare time trying to rebuild Spring to see if i can resolve, but its a big learning curve for me as i've never done any Mac or Linux development before.
Be very cool to get Spring working on the mac though. The new desktop macs (mini aside) have relatively powerful GPUs now so it would be worthwhile...

Even if we had a weak mac support for spring, the ability to advertise it as said would likely find enough additional mac users that Spring mac support would increase. If spring did become known to most mac community as a free well designed RTS game that alone would make a huge impact on our petite community. Spring coming into the mac spot light would be a great launching pad for the rest of the gaming community. If Spring did become noted in the mac community, the status would give spring the basis to demand attention from gaming magazines and such.
Before we could do this with success The spring package needs to be standardized and streamlined. With on organized source for directions from the lobby Spring could make an acceptable state of function. In fact we have much of the product we just need the presentation. Easy clear and detailed support needs to be integrated.
The spring downloader is nice but it does and can consume system resources. I suggest that some of the Downloader be incorporated into an improved lobby, keeping only most simple needs. I do think that an auto connection to TS is a wise idea.
How we could restructure a client:
Code: Select all
- Single Player
- Multi player
- Replays
- Settings//Guides
- Settings for ingame (what is now the settings.exe)
- User settings/battle Hub settings
- TS settings
- Settings to reduce system resource consumption (a redundant location, but for the sake of user convenience - The settings should be available in their respective places as well)
- Auto map/mod get settings gadgets/widgets
- listings
- maps
- mod
- widgets
- gadgets
- Guides
- how to use the battle Hub (lobby)
- how to manualy add content (maps, mods, widgets, ...)
- how to play mods (guides)
- BA guide
- CA guide
- NOTA guide
- where to get content
- where to find spring sites and so on
+integrated TS
+integrated Downloader
I tried to make an out line but I either lack the knowledge or it can not :/
The idea is to have one running program/battle hub that is a stand alone program for Spring.
If we could do all this with out have all of these individual programs running that would finally make Spring some thing that could actual be successful.
Having this host of programs we need to manage and keep track of is killing us from expanding. We need to fix our usability and centralize the settings. If we can form a way for mods to update their guides as the mods change, that would be good.
The idea I am suggesting is that we make a program that runs everything so we do not have have all the other junk scattered around.
It would also be crucial that the hub have
ahhh! I ran out of time. I will be back to finish this thought.
- okay I finished :p

SpringLobby already has automatic map/mod download via the torrent system integrated, the TS auto channel moving (not the autostart of TS tho) and SpringSettings integrated. It's been built on Mac successfully, but not recently. What we need is a dedicated Mac maintainer/developer for packaging, finding mac specific issues, etc.

So are you saying that macs can adequately play spring but they need a dev to maintain it? I ask because s friend uses a mac. he has had great trouble finding and using what is available. He still can not play. And so I wonder...can he?

i have no clue about the engine itself. What i'm saying is that springlobby will run on mac. The problem is none of us developers has a mac and so it hasn't been built in a while.
