Unable to fire at my own units

When I click attack then left click near one of my own unit, the attack order isn't carried out. The only exception is the commander dgun. I tried a commandfire=1; weapon on a candgun=1; unit and it still wouldn't let me fire at my own unit, only the dgun can. This annoys me immensly. If I want to fire at my own units, I should able to. Don't target the unit but the ground below like in TA, but please still carry the order. (oh.... I just realised maybe it tries to do that but find out the line of fire is blocked by friendly and so cancel the fire).

This is especially annoying when you get an IFF problem. In a game I played last night, for some reason Spring thought an enemy's geothermal plant was friendly and wouldn't let me fire at it.
I finally decided to send about 10 spare AKs, surround the plant, and let his defenses (plasma batteries) kill the plant along with my AKs...

Yeah, those unit footprint bubbles often obstruct the line of fire of units, it's quite annoying that a Bertha refuses to fire because a plant is blocking it's fire path.
I think a better logic would be needed for firing past friendly units, possibly aiming higher in a ballistic arc so the unit is not hit by friendly units.
I also like to target friendly units to test my weapons on.
also, could there be a toggle for weapon damage? that you can see the damage inflicted on the unit on screen in a numerical value? i.e. a plasma cannon dealing 360 damage to a unit misses but the area damages still does damage, i'd like to see how much the damage is.
