That is why i hated Civilization too!
My oldest brother plays Wesnoth seemed like Battle Isle 2 combined with "Master of Magic"! Never tried to play it myself though

Too much luck, too much RPG, very little strategy.
Its a pretty shitty game really. Good to waste time on if you like old school party-based CRPG or liked Warlords but thought it didnt have enough random numbers and XP.

it's a very well produced game but the luck element is extraordinarily annoying, making it completely unplayable. although it's obviously pretty reasonably random, you too often won't land a single one of your 8 hits on an enemy and then they'll land 7 of their 8 on you. despite the huge number of complaints about it constantly on their forums from the very start, a large number of patches which offered options to reduce it, and a lot of very good players leaving because they couldn't stand it anymore (the game generally has a high turnover i think), it's taken as a highly important part of the game and completely unchangeable. an example of game devs ruining a game imo.

Any game which pertains to any competitive element must avoid luck as much as possible without destroying the game play environment.

Its strange to see this many people complaining about the luck element, because I have played for quite a long time now and I find that luck never really has anything to see with the final result of matches.

I fear thats what I am thinking :)
I personally think the luck element makes things a lot more interesting and a lot more like real-life, and Im finding it fun to have to deal with things going better or worse than I espected.

The more units in play the less luck is a factor. Sure you can lose a game on ishar's cross because 1 spearmen failed to hit or w/e, but things like 2v2 on clash, you cant really blame luck for your loss.
Like WH40k or any other TBS, a lot of the strategy/tactics is in engineering a conflict situation where you can stack the odds as much as possible in your favour.
The day night cycle, and varied mobility/terrain dependancies of the factions really help to accentuate this dynamic, and i think that Wesnoth is pretty well balanced.

I never found luck to be all that big a deal...just out number them and pound them to shit, like lots of games.
No, it was the fact that the girl character and the boy character's budding romance was shorted out by the fact they were cousins!
DAMN IT! They did it to me again, those sneaky romance-sabotage-via-cousins bastards.

Although the luck part is annoying, the RPG elements, especially in the campaigns, are much more so. The randomness is a part of the game, you can work with it and make it work in your favor.
BTW - somewhat adequate:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_limit_theorem
as to luck being unacceptable in pro games - not true, ask any poker or backgammon player.

Well I play mostly online games against other people, and in these games the RPG element is hardly an issue unleash you set the XP multiplier really high. The only anoyance in that matter is the healing effect of leveling up... but thats something you strategically manage to isnt it? :)

ROFL. That's like one of those freaky shock moments in movies.

though, I note no one seemed to care that the two human love interests in Elfen Leid were cousins.
But, hey, the choice is between your cousin and a split personality psychopathic redheaded horned mutant with telepysic rip rip kill kill arms...is a tough one...
Hmm...
Both! Perfect answer!
