steampunk is alright

When it's done well. That steampunk lamp is shite, and I actually like steampunk (it's fun to draw and model). I think I know why, too.

At least part of the allure of steampunk is working out how the hell all the cogs and whistles work together as one machine (ala Rule Goldberg, or however his name is spelt). In good steampunk, you have complexity, but you also have the sense that that complexity is there for a reason: it needs to be complex for the steam-thing to work, it serves a purpose.

That lamp is shite because the 'steampunky' bits serve no purpose. They're blatantly there for aesthetic purposes only. Probably because it is just a light-bulb, which is itself just a simple object you can't exactly overcomplicate with cogs and whistles.

Live and let live. When you get steampunk fanatics knocking at our door with panflets, then you have the right to hate it and tell us about it.

I don't mind it. I think it sort of cool. but the link you have provided are not good examples of the genre.
