What sites are decent that any of you guys may have used to buy a website domain name? I want to make my personal site look more professional and conceal the fact I use my university's host :P.

don't use a reseller if you can help it, but if you have to try godaddy.com They are actually quite good.

k cool. i almost registered with them but all the advertising on the site kinda put me off at first glance. ty

edit: hur google has a really good price - $10 includes private whois at no extra fee+email im and such. but by avoiding resellers, do you mean I could register for free?

no, not at all. Domains aren't free, but resellers gobble the domains up, and resell them at higher prices. It pays to do some research into it. Dreamhost is an authorized seller of domain, google definitely is, neither are resellers.

You want to buy from companies who get the domains directly. Something that a lot of people don't realize... Network Solutions is actually only a domain reseller.

Private whois is a must. Believe me, you can mine a lot of data from someone who doesn't understand exactly how easy it is to find personal info via whois trawling.

BTW the moment you buy it and point it. Lock the domain, otherwise someone could transfer it to a different provider and might actually manage to steal it from you. It happens a lot more often than you might think.
