Is there anyway to start a single player game without opening a lobby?

Just start the main executable.

"without opening a lobby"?
Assuming you're using "Springlobby" (since you're using linux), just press cancel when the window pops up asking whether you want to connect.
You don't need to connect, or be online even to play single player.

You can play by just starting the main spring executable as well.

Thanks for your help! Just one more question. What is the executable's name, including extension, and where does it reside? Sorry, I lied, two more questions!

It's easier to start a single player game using the single player tab of the springlobby client than it is to use the actual spring executable though. You can pick a map and an AI, even position him.

Why we need to use some 3rd party programs to play? Can Spring have selfbody some little small simple interface for most main operations? Or Spring have ideology of clear engine for anything?

It's just easier this way... clear separation of tasks, etc.

Well, tiny when they aren't
both using borked text management. Springlobby right now has the rich text albatross and tasclient has... something with its own ui libs and possibly leaking text out of the top of the buffer. Is battlehub in a working state right now? It was never very impressive resource-wise either. End tangent.
