Licho, can you consider renaming the caupdater to springupdater?
It already fullfils that function anyway and CA is very well knows in the community.
It would be excellent if the caupdater could be integrated into the lobby or atleast start outomaticly when the lobby starts and be minimized by default, with a good default setting of downlaoding the map u need for the current game your in and so on.
Would be also good if it could calibrate its uplaoding figures by testingthe users uplaod downlaod capabilites every once in a while and minimize any interaction with it.
It shoudl be outomated and ut of the box but customizable for the more persistant players.

Lordmatt i think the default choices in the instller should be to downlaod all the 1v1 maps and team maps and lal the mods.
Yes itsa bit more to downlaod but were not in the age of 56k internet.
Also i tihnk you need to make an extra map list that will not be turned on by default that will include all playable halfdecent map that dont have game beaking features.

Id even go further by saying that peopel who watched the trailers and vids on youtube or somewhere else, and were thinking to themselves,"that looks like a very cool game",these people expect the game to be at least a few hundred megs, big size as a natural consequance of a good game.
I dont think we need to fear big downlaoding sizes.

CA != Spring.

Well, it would be nice if that could be the default, but I have a feeling ppl will not be expecting the long DL and will end up cancelling things, which might cause worse problems in the end.

There are mant free games and mods that easily take a few hundredmegs and even over a gig...

You could make a poll or something on this question and see what people think. I am open to changing it.

I think that we should give people only one map or mod (newest versions of the most popular) and then have then download the rest using the downloader.

I would get skewered by the whole (forum) community if I made BA the default download but not the other mods in the installer. ;)

I think while Gota got a point that one would expect it to be a large download (its a 3d rts cmon...), I think the installer is perhaps bloated compared to whats being played

I wish there is a similar stats thing for maps like there is for mods...however, really,. if you put in DSD, Tabula and say.. Speedmetal, wouldn't that account of <insert made up number but its alot> of the games that are actually played?

Though, that's biased toward large team games =/

Make something rather obscure and infrequently played like the old starwars mod or War Evo (which I cannot figure out how to get) the default mod. This forces people to learn how to download mods and maps. It is also a good idiot filter.

I think that including all the mods wont make the file gargentuan, and the benefits are huge cause it will mean that players wont even have tpo think about needing to downlaod omse mod and figuring out wtf that means and so on...its just a solution to help newcomers get familer enough with the game to divert some of their time to understanding it..
I think all major mods should be default and all current team and 1v1 maps should be default aswell.
That would give a high probablity of a player not having to downlaod anything else til he played a few games.

And i tihnk its time to stop advertising ba all the time??
I like SA so should i also insert a recomendation about it in this text?

I will make apoll now aobut it.But please think it over.. even afew hunfred megs is nothing today ...seriously.. person who liked the vids or heard someoen say the game is awsome wont mind downloading a few hundred megs..

Hi. Welcome to Spring. Spring is an open source RTS engine.

BA is not advertised at all. I would say CA is the most advertised mod. Also, why should we protect new players from downloads? The have to do it eventually.

oh man.
I was reffering to lordmatt trying to shove BA everywhere.
Of course people will have to download stuff eventually..
Do you bother reading the entire post? or you just read the first few lines?

easing them into the experience is a lot better then trusting the elephant sized girth of spring's awkwardly huge clusterf**k of a setup on someone right at the start.

Most users new users won't be uncomfortable downloading content. And if they are chances are they wouldn't be able to get their PC set up so it can run spring anyways. It'd be really nice to have it set up in such a way that it would automatically stream like most games do, but that's more a convenience thing than an ease of use thing. The MAJOR problem right now is if you download spring, you need to just sort of magically know some how that you need to head to jobjol or one of the other distribution sites, because our lobby client still currently links to UF, which is obscenely stupid.

Where have I been trying to 'shove' BA?

That is a non-example. In that quote, he said he would NOT "shove BA".

That was, of course, in response to a suggestion that I make the most popular mod the default. I was saying why that wasn't a good idea.

tbh ca should be the default just because its the shiniest and has the most features, not to mention the LUA tooltips and stuff. of course, because it updates every other day this is not possible.
