A somewhat hypocritical blogpost, do read if you have a habit of expressing opinions and telling people what to do on these forums!

Read it, couldn't disagree more, tbh. This has been one of the most active periods I've ever had here, and the number of things that have gotten done, by a large number of folks, is pretty amazing. You're obviously not seeing the forest, let alone the trees.

Argh, your impact on spring and the impact of many other people is indeed great, but its what you did that changed things not what you said. Nobody could care less what you said, they're only interested in what you actually do.

Please, nobody cares what you think about your work they only care what they think about your work.

People aren't bothered what your opinion on a b and c is, but they did get interested in world builder. The vast majority of users will have skipped what you said entirely and just looked at the pictures, and its the same for most other threads.

I here have the rare luxury of my target audience being the people who think everyone listens to them and that what they say actually matters, because these are the people who actually care what everyone else is saying and take it to heart and go on crusades over it.

So unless your words are truly visionary ( and most importantly your told theyre visionary by everyone and you dont proclaim them as revolutionary in your first sentence), I would think that you should revalue your opinions. People dont want words and monologues, they want actions, code, models, fancy gameplay, content.

I think arghs been given all he needs to see the truth. If someone wishes to deny themselves the light that is their choice and I've wasted enough time as it is in that last post.

alas some people are unreachable

Wait a minute... first we have a post, then a post about a post about a post, in large part in regards to whether my posts, about other issues, are relevant?

Meh, if it's TL, DNR, but saying, "meh, it's TL:DNR" doesn't necessarily mean that it is, for the audience I am actually writing for. Not all topics are amendable to haiku. Now, I'm going back to getting a game done- the "action" part...

Fail at attracting your target audience, then (Argh is your target audience and you just pissed him off).

I agree. Stop writing blogposts plz AF.

Discussion about the dramatics of the spring community are not discussions about spring. This belongs in "Off topic".

I swear, I'm going to print that one out and put it on my wall. You cannot be visionary unless everybody says so first. Heh. Makes me giggle. It's like the Catch-22 of genius.

Anyhoo, back to non-working on my vaporware project, built of long essays that magically turn themselves into code

Visionaries are too busy being visonary to consider themselves revolutionaries.

Not true.

Most visionaries promoted their ideas very strongly, through speeches, texts, essays and demonstrations. The number of real visionaries who achieved everything in a dark room, by themselves, is very, very small.

To be a visionary, and actually achieve anything, you have to communicate with people. Moreover, great ideas may have their genesis in one mind, but may find fruition in other places. If they're not communicated, then nobody knows about the idea, aside from the originator, who may not have time / energy / aptitude to bring it about.

Take, for example, Churchill's push behind the development of the LST, in World War II. Churchill probably didn't come up with the idea. He "merely" recognized its central importance to the evolution of amphibious warfare in a modern context, and then put great political force behind getting engineers to build the things.

That's a visionary approach, AF. I could cite a dozen examples, easily, about how most of the fundamental aspects of our current technology were the result of not one brilliant, inventive mind, fumbling in the dark, but of visionary people who saw that a given idea was great, and stood up for it, and promoted it. Teams, whether intentional cooperatives or collectives formed through common goals, are far more powerful in the long term than any one visionary.

Linus Torvalds didn't create the entirety of UNIX, then create Linux. Let alone the 086 processor series, or their instruction sets, or any of the other work involved before he came up with his idea. He built upon things that were already extant. Nobody argues that he wasn't a visionary, however, for seeing a need and putting the effort into it, then shamelessly promoting it until it caught on. Nor does anybody, including Torvalds, claim that he did it all on his own.

I think you're stuck in a very 19th Century POV, thinking that all important things come from a central inventor in a garage, or something (the real history of such things tends to directly refute this romantic view, but meh). I look on stuff as an organic synthesis. Stuff I say here, there, or somewhere else may spark a thought, which sparks a concept, which catches fire and becomes a working thing. Stuff other people say or do has that affect on me as well, which is why I spend a great chunk of my free time on research runs, which I occasionally share the fruits of. One must remain curious and attentive to one's environment, and willing to stand up for their ideas. A real visionary is not somebody who sits around, waiting for the idea that transforms the world. They get going, and get help, and get people motivated, and share in the fruits of victory.

Really, AF, you just come across as depressed in your blog post, and I wish you'd cheer up! Caydr's just having fun, I'm busy and I've been very productive, and am finally getting towards the end of production on the Resistance... there are a ton of cool things happening in the Lua world, that are finally starting to come together... it's pretty exciting stuff, tbh.
