Why does air cause lag?

I know this is a taken-for-granted question, but i don't understand why.

Because of collision detection for aircraft, and sometimes because they use a really long LOS.

We've already talked about this around here, and different mods / games have shut off detection of aircraft collisions, after a change was made to Spring to allow that.

Further solutions to this would have to include rewriting the aircraft code, which has already been done to some extent by ILMTitan. IOW, it's being fixed, insofar as people feel like fixing it.

Oh thanks. I always thought that it was either the large amount of new types of units being used taking up memory, or that its something with the camera.

because transfering data over wireless can cause ample packet loss. you are luck you have not lost connection outright :P.

And also found temporary solution: reduce sight distance of fighters to 500.

That is a horrible temporary solution. Their missile range is actually longer than that iirc, this is madness.

Air lag, i guess a solution is to add an option onto the lobby that tells it to have a max number of aircraft, next to the slider that sets the max number of units in general allowed.

you are just wrong. Many units have longer range than sight and are fine, especially figters where 1 can get in los and other 40 fire. Also XTA figters have 500 los and work fine doh..

BTW its not air units that lag but sight distance over 550. Try bombing with 500 BA bombers.. wont lag at all.

Noize will fix los in next ba so no more lag :)

The main issue, now that I've tested, is that AirLos, set in Sensors.tdf, doesn't seem to be doing anything anymore...

BA's 6.21 figters are fine now with reduced LOS. Try with 500 armfig.. before i got 2 fps, now 15. :)

Air is not the only one. Having massive amount of nano turrets in speedmetal does cause quite a lag.

Sort of a side question:
When was Collision detection ever used? I remember nukes flying into my planes (oh it was so annoying...great way to clear your base...have construction planes repair a nuke fac, while you're firing them...)
But I remember no incident where collision was used between aircraft...

Or did it simply keep them from flying on top of each other?

Yeah, more like collision prevention. (Aircraft steer away if there's another aircraft directly in front, IIRC.)

(So it's would-be-collision detection, and then steering to prevent the collision ;-))

AFAIK it's been there from the start, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if it totally doesn't work and just consumes CPU.
