Any decent space combat sims made recently?

I played through Freespace 1/2 a few weeks ago, left me wanting more. Does anyone know of a similar game that's been made more recently?

Only ones I know of are the X series, which is incomprehensible and would take me too long to learn, and "DarkStar One" which just couldn't hold my interest for more than a couple hours.

Normally I'd just look up the genre somewhere, but lately I've become more and more aware that there's a lot of good games that just don't get any press. For instance this really neat game called Space Rangers 2... Anyways, any ideas?

Well besides classics like Freelancer or I-War 2 this genre is somewhat dead (I still pray that they really are working on Freespace 3). There also is Space Force Rogue Universe but that game is just bad. I mean it got somewhat good critics but I stopped playing it after an hour or so - sooo boring and sooo many stupid design decisions (I still lol at weapons having like 6 different damage values - one for every race in the game or something like that)...

If you're into something "completely different" and especially if you're a fan of Babylon 5 you should try I've found her or what the recent campaign is. As Freeware it's worth a try anyway... :-)

Freespace 2 is the only good one which looks decent.

Beyond the Red Line is probably the best. Ever. And Its free too. Unfortuneatly the campaign is 2 missions long. But just playing whats there you can definately say that if the game was completed, it'd naturally probably be the best.

Its a huge shame the gaming industry has abandoned space shooters.

If somebody would give me about 3 million dollars for a production budget, and another 2 for marketing, I would happily produce Freelancer II...

Er, I meant, "no, other than X3, which was OK but not wonderful, there hasn't been much of anything in this genre lately"...

He's asking for a combat sim, not a trade sim. X, Freelancer and Darkstar One are primarily about trading and economy (like Elite). Freespace is a straight-up combat sim, you're a soldier, you got your capital ship and you blow aliens into bits.

Starlancer is meh, the character shields are WAY too obvious and it has too much movie physics (OMG 4 torps sink our flagship! OMG one of the 16 torpedos didn't hit an enemy standard capital ship, it's getting away!)

I'm not necessarily against games that aren't directly about space combat, the main thing I like is sci-fi with a good story. Emphasis on story. FS1/2 were great that way, the last missions of both games made you actually feel like you were in a grim situation.

"Beyond the Red Line" kicks ass, just so you know. It felt as grim and as gritty as the new BSG series, and had that great sound effect for shooting.

Apparently Derek Smart posted on AVault asking if he should get the rights to FS3. I can't decide if this is good or horrible. His games have a nasty reputation.

Ugh, god! NO!

Derek Smart games are painfully horrible. They're great, amazing ideas with horrible, horrible implementation.

There's Vega Strike and there were quite a few mods for it in production. Vega Strike itself became boring after an hour against the AI but it might be fun against human opponents.
