Skinning Contest.

Ok, time for a contest. KDR, you've never put up a finished skin in your whole time here, and Rattle, you're a lazy bum. Anybody else need to be insulted first? Or are you all a bunch of no-good, wussy modelers around here?

Objective: make this helicopter model look as good as possible. Crowd judges.

Get the mesh here. .3DS format, for ease of use.

Rules:

1. You may not add new geometry to the model, or change the mesh in any way. The mesh must be as-is.

2. Your skin must be 128/128 pixels on a side, or less.

3. Final shots must be from UpSpring, showing use of a glow and reflection map.

4. Deadline is 11PM, Central Standard Time. No exceptions. We can run a second contest for people in the Eastern Hemisphere, if they want to.

Go.

Add 5 or 6 hours to your clock then you know what time it is for me and KDR, as it's 22:45 pm here.

Fine, you get until 8PM tomorrow evening, German time. Fair enough? I don't want you to go without sleep, over a silly contest. Everybody in the USA is still under deadline, though. It's not like this is hard.

I'm done with the first stage- the beast is unwrapped. May have to re-arrange after first texture test, but here ya go, note my choices for detail areas:

I'm not a texture artist, but I have this whip.

Wow, couldn't make the model any uglier? A realistic skin on that thing would look plain stupid. In fact anything short of a Draco or Emmanuel texture would look out of place on that. Maybe if you wrote "NERF" on the side...

I will make it look good.

I think we all have better things to do here than compare texture artist penis size.

Anyway, the discussion here is about efficient use of the uvmap space. It is not about anyones skill as a texture artist, as you are obviously talented at that and i dont think anyone questions your skill. Just your practice.

But your skill, one way or another, doesnt give you a free ride to give bad advice.

Nor does your lack of skill give you a free ride to deride my free advice. Either compete, or don't. You'll learn a lot from trying.

Okay, I think that's enough trying to get people to play your game by insulting them.

Do you mind if I go down to 128x64?

No, by all means, give it a go!

Not especially happy with that. I may have to split the body further, but I don't want to give up texture space for the engines.

Cool, evil black. Couldn't get the map any smaller without losing something vital along the way, tried it. Could do it with geometry, but not with paint- I'd love to use about 6 triangles at this point ;)

I think that's it for me... lemme get the glow / reflect map done real fast, and we can see it in UpSpring.

Given I have a mod with 300+ units all of whom I need to uvmap.. so I will pass, as I would rather learn by texturing my own model, than someone elses..

Yay, I'm done! Now I never, ever want to see this model again. Hand-beveling sucks.

I hand-shade every single texture I've ever done. So stop complaining. :)

That's decent.

No idea if I'm gonna finish it tonight as in stay up until it's done because your little timeline is retarded for us europeans.

Anyway, I made some progress...

128x64 texture, the redish stuff is all team color.

Sorry Rattle, I did say 8PM tomorrow for you guys in Europe. Seemed terribly unfair to keep you up for something relatively silly like this.

I like everything on that but the cockpit, and the preshading needs work.

Full bright on the left, shaders and shit on the right.
Textures/models

Tiny textures are tiny... never again indeed.

edit: CAN SOMEONE PLEASE FIX THE STUPID URL PARSER THANK YOU
everytime you hit the preview button all your truncated URLs are being converted to strings. This is highly annoying.

I decided to try this, never having done 3d modeling or texturing before, but I was interrupted while learning how to UV map.
