Cheapest way? No idea. Well, I would get two 500 GB drives, SATA, write the data to them, and then take any EXTREMELY important stuff and write that to DVD as a redundant move. Then, remove the drives, put them in ESATA enclosures and store them in another location.

I would have a backup if I had the money spare to buy an extra hard drive.

i lost some of my files when i was resizing my partitions... and lost some data when i copied them to CD's and after 5 years those CD's didnt work anymore, eheh...
so i would say dont ever never copy your data to CD, just buy some harddrive and copy them to there... its pretty impossible to lose data from harddrive if you dont download viruses etc...

I think Cds wont lose the data if you lock then in a iron chest and burrow it on the ground or something... :)

Optical media while stable for a while, does have a lifespan. It just happens to be fairly long, on the order of several decades to a century. So if you are backing up to optical media I would suggest multiple backups and checking/reburning the backups every so often. Also although this might be cheaper in the short term, backing up to a hard drive is probably cheaper in the long term and is probably more convenient.

Same here. I do have a very bad feeling I will do it someday, and that day will be painful.

i dont think you can ever lose your whole harddrive at once, the data is still there, but you just cant read it because the device is broken, not the disks inside are broken...

Backup harddrive: $100
Data recovery: $5000

I've lost two hard drives, (both due to overheating, and I've actually resolved the situation by modifying the laptop case to add a cooling vent for the drive) and one of them actually _caught fire_. That was a whole hardrive loss.

I actually once had the file structure get corrupted (how, I'll never know) on my backup drive while trying to get data off it - double hardrive failure FTL, I lost almost all my photographs from college.

mm i do , once a week to a NAS (network attached storage) with two 750gb drives, configured as one drive (~1500mb). Then once a month i burn all important stuff to dvd, which is then stored off site. I've never had a hard drive fail or had a house fire, but at least i know I'm reasonably safe...

My work computer is a stupid HP pavillion and had a 180gb Maxtor which died a few months ago after 3 years. Luckily I kept stuff backed up externally. Don't feel too safe.
