"British Accent"

The term British Accent annoys me. What is a British Accent? Take a person from Scotland, Wales and England and you can pretty much guarantee that their pronunciation will be very different. Hell, just by taking people from Northern England and Southern England would do that. There is no British Accent arghghghgh.

I just LOLed at this thread.
I think the British accent is used to generally refer to the way a person from GB pronounces such things as their vowels (mostly) differently than other English speaking countries. Same goes for an American accent, Australian accent, South African accent, Singaporean accent etc. etc. In more diverse countries there will most definitely be variations in dialects, but the kind of accent regarded as the "norm" for that country (i.e. the way newscasters speak in each respective country) is how many people around the world imagine the accent of it's citizens. However, in reality there are many different accents in almost every country. Everyone around the globe just can't be expected to be familiar with all of them. Therefore, we generalize... not stereotype.
Now go have your tea and crumpets!
P.S. And Machio is great!

"The most common form of English used by the British ruling class is that originating from southeast England (the area around the capital, London, and the ancient English university towns of Oxford and Cambridge). This form of the language is known as the "Received Standard", and its accent is called Received Pronunciation (RP), which is improperly regarded by many people outside the UK as "the British accent". Earlier it was held as better than other accents and referred to as the King's (or Queen's) English, or even "BBC English"." source:english wikipedia /article:British_English
This is probably what's usually meant by the term British Accent abroad.

When I think of British accents, I think of Coronation Street, because my mother would watch it religiously when I was growing up.

Its the same with Australian accent. Hell the Australian culture. You have NO IDEA how angry i get when someone calls me 'Australian' in the same breath as a queenslander. Fuck. Steve. Irwin.
Queensland is the Texas of Australia. I think there is something about warm climates that rotts the brain and destroys pronunciation.
Thats like thinking all Americans are like George W Bush.
Most peoples idea of a culture is what they see on TV.
