hello all, this is my first model for spring ( i have done modelling for other things) and here it is, in very early stages. I need some guidance as to how it will look.

The concept is taken from this concept art :

http://www.caspring.org/attachment/wiki ... ig-Gun.jpg

and then i drew it in 3d :

In SketchUp :

That is interesting, but it feels a little... hurm. Small? Simple?

Depends what it is going to be near, I suppose!

well the size can be altered.. but with the "simple" , where do u want more detail or features?

you will get textures when i finish the model itself

and for my texturing: almost none :?

im will be going through the UV mapping tutorials and such to learn. and im fairly good with PS, so it shouldnt be too bad.... i hope

As a first model, this is alright, but the concept art on the CA page is not final. In fact, that big gun that is reproduced a total of 6 times on that page is actually the evolution of a single ship-borne gun and as you scroll down you can see its just a series of concepts for the same unit. These are hashing out designs, so we can pick through them, find a concept we like, refine them, etc.

It reproduces the concept art faithfully, the concept art isnt really complex enough. They are not meant to be modelled yet and arent really ready to go in game, though if you want to just practice modelling from them nobody would stop you.

Keep practising, try a few different units, and develop your skills further. This is a good reproduction of the concept, as i said, so keep it up.

ok, so what i might do, is start with the Bertha or Intimidator or some other plasma gun (any ones that really need doing? ) and remodel that.

You need more definition and detail.

I am more used to higher poly models, though, so feel free to do whatever.

the lack of definition and detail is due to the simple concept art. i will instead strive to remake current plasma defense structures.

Haha you guys. We already have that one modelled, actually, and we dont even know what we are going to do with it. :P

Well at least i know that if we ever get some decent concept art, CA will have no problems finding enthusiastic modellers....

well i was going to texture it but i will not now since you have it done...
this was my texturing plan:

i guess i will think about concept art instead.

what style would you need?

<EDIT> i dont think i need concept art (but thanks for the offer  ) just need to get better at moddeling, then ill try remake the core intimidator for CA

clumsy_culhane, the top bit is from a different gun it has different base and stuff also i think the concept show a slight slant with the shading on the top.

But they say they have it modeled so lets get going on the concept art then?

i hate it how i have to boot to inferior os to use the tablet!

Let me just say that I think camouflage is the worst texture possible. Not only is it ugly and overused, it also works against the game interface. The number one goal when modeling/texturing is for the unit to be easily recognizable. Trying to make it blend in with the terrain is just a bad design for an RTS.

what should one use? straight metal that blends in with the terrain pretty well too - and you have the team stripe to see the unit.

but Dazzle Camouflage is supercool. I'd like units with that.
