Just posting my specs as of next year:

3 ghz Pentium D dual core [for $100 who can argue]

1.5gb ram [I don't know]

MSI NX8600GT-TD512EZ/D2 [Re-worked version of the 8600GT, it's a steal at $105, dual core, fanless, realtime overclocking, and autoupdating drivers]

SoundBlaster Audigy [Cause I CAN!]

Total Cost: $625 [Cheapest Sleeper PC ever]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can fight alienwares with an e-machine

Nice rig dude, but your graphics card is not dual core, rofl.

The 8600GT has 32 shader cores...not sure where you're pulling that "dual" from. And no you won't be fighting an alienware with 1.5GB of ram of unspecified speed, and a pentium D. :P

gah the pentium D.. get a core 2 duo/quad :(..

I (and clumsy_culhane) can. Don't be fooled by the Pentium's high clock rate--the Core 2 Duo, and even the Athlon 64 x2, accomplish much more per cycle, even if they don't get quite as many cycles. Better to get a Athlon 64 x2 if you don't want to spend more than ~$150 on a processor, or a Core 2 Duo if you are. At $100 or less I would recommend the Athlon 64 x2 4600+.

Supreme Commander benchmark. A 3.0 GHz Pentium D and the 4600+ have been highlighted in red.

Get 2 modules of 1 GiB each or 2 modules of 2 GiB each. You get better performance if you take advantage of dual channel, which means that you need to get modules in pairs; 1 GiB is too little RAM, so you'll want to go for 2 or 4 GiB. 2 modules of 1 GiB DDR2 RAM at 800 MHz and standard timings can easily be had for less than $50 nowadays.

Edit: I realized that the 4800+ is not the best idea, since you get worse RAM performance with the Athlon 64 x2 unless the clock rate is a multiple of 400 MHz at default FSB speed. 4600+ is the way to go at this price, unless you can find one of the older 4800+s with the proper FSB rate and multiplier. Plus it's ~$20 cheaper.

remember, always use a 64bit OS if you have more than 2GB ram or you may not be able to use all of it.

huh

This pc can fight alienwares, and the video card is dual core.

I have the same CPU in my dell, it runs quiet and fast, even with a ton of programs open.

I will have spent $625 on a pc that most people pay over $1000 for.

Fixed.

Once again, that video card is NOT dual core it has 32 shader cores (compared to the gtx, which has 128). That "dual core center" thing you see on that page is software. It allows you to designate which processes get which core.

The pentium D processors are nothing compared to the core2duo's. Seriously.

And Dual CoreCell is a random technology that they developed to make their products a little more stable and overclockable.
"Dual CoreCell, a new technology that MSI is pushing. The Dual CoreCell is an ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) that has been designed to improve the performance of MSI’s motherboards and VGA components in four key areas, Performance, Image, Sound and Silence."

While you may have one of those CPUs and like it, it simply isn't the best value for the money.

Sure, if your case (and wallet) are big enough.

Man, where do you live? That looks pretty poor for the $625 budget you've alotted...

The ultra is a waste of money, get a GTS or GTX if you want to blow your money on something good. Even the 8600GT is decent. Besides as you can see Ultras are huge. Covers up a lot of important stuff on my motherboard which isn't so cool.

wow

So, what is the loss of getting an ultra over the GTX?

Yeah I've got one and I can't put in a second without covering up the SATA2 ports...

I don't know what that is, so I really don't care.

I'm probably sticking with the NX8600GT, and returning the crap I get for Christmas to get the CPU.
