i have a budget of approx 1000€, i have the binded choice to buy an NVIDIA due to the horrible support for ATI cards cards in linux so please don't suggest an ATI

what would be a good cpu/motherboard/ram/gpu combo for the above price, what would be an appropriate cooling system, ecc

i'm gonna use pc really as general pourpose, from playing spring to mutitrack audio editing, finite state analysis or testing DSP algorythms in that evil thing called matlab

i live in italy, so don't propose special offders from oversea countries...

I've based this on a spec I built a few months ago with some modifications. You didn't specify exactly what you need, so I included everything from the case to the monitor:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
RAM: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4
GPU: GeForce 8800 GT (Half the price of the GTX, but performance is as good and in some benchmarks its better)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA P35C DS3R
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB
PSU: Corsair HX 520W
CPU Cooler: Tuniq Tower 120 (The stock cooler is fine, only get this if you are going to overclock.)
Case: Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS II
Monitor: Samsung SM-206BW
Keyboard: Saitek Eclipse 2
Mouse: Logitech MX510
Thermal Compound: Arctic Silver 5 (For CPU cooler)

Looks like a solid set up there, Relative. Personally I'd go for a Seasonic PSU and a samsung HDD (a little quieter components) but everything there is good.

Well the Corsair PSU are based off seasonic's design. Plus they come with a 5 year warranty!!

Pretty much what Relative said. Take special note to get an 8800GT (not GTX and not GTS), it's really that good.

Also, I'd take the MX518 as my mouse, but maybe that's just me ^^
