retexturing ta models

I was just admiring the new goliath model and was thinking that what made the biggest differance was the texture...
So i was thinking if someone wants to try to retexture the mavrick...its a hard thing to do but we have some talanted pipolz...so if anyone thinks he is up to it im sure all ta based mods would love for a new retextured mavrick(who knows maybe even a remodeled mavrick).

3do s3o, big difference. I doubt anyone wants to pop open 3dbuilder and try to retexture anything... that would suck.

just export stuff to a .3ds, rebuild it in a modeling program, or just unwrap it, bing.. easy as pie.

Spending the time to make good quality textures however, is time consuming.

i dont think ianmac has any idea how much work goes into a good quality (ie, MrD's Goliath or smoth's morty) remodel of a cavedog unit.

Its not like there are talented texturers sitting around here with nothing to texture, most of the ones i know (smoth, Argh, GMN, Spiked to name some of the more high-profile ones) are working flat out on their own projects, none of which have anything to do with rebuilding OTA models.

If I do a direct conversion to s30, do I need to rescript?

*SIGHS* learn to model and texture. Stop wanting other people to do your work, if you want to see something happen, unless you have a lot of excess income, make it yourself for epic win.

I can, but it takes ages and I'm not that good at it. I'd post a picture showing this, but I'm posting from school at the moment, so...

I have found a nice and quick way of doing dirt though! (It involves an extra layer, a mud colour, noise and the eraser tool using one of the preset brushes and a low flow setting for the airbrush. I might put up a tutorial later, when I'm home)

Yeah, I don't see why you don't try your hand at texturing, it strikes me as something you'd be good at.

if some one redid all the gif art from ota content and found a bunch of free-right sounds to replace the old ones, what would be left un old copy right material?

I don't think we'd be out of uncertain legal ground, as we'd still be wholesale lifting their IP using things such as 'Peewee' 'Morty' etc.

But it would be a lot better, as it moves from allowing people to access what is effectively the physical property of atari (internal files, sounds, etc) without paying for it, to simply repackaging ideas. Given that those ideas are not being resold for profit or anything, while legally it's probably just as bad; realistically it's a lot less likely to attract ire; especially seeing as OTA gameplay has been largely distorted from the original ideas in the mods that use TA content.

That's my understanding, anyway.

Except for Krogoth perhaps, none of the names of the OTA units belong to Atari in any shape or form. Pretty much all of them were nouns that were in use long before they became unit names, and I very much doubt you can copyright a word regardless.

huh

A.K. A fast little bug with dual lazers, no, not really, more of assault K-bot.

Someone should just make a mod that is a real RTS with free content. We need more then Gundam and EE, the latter kicking enormous ass lately.

I tried to make some models which reflect the same functionality as OTA units but people just want OTA.

+1 for truth.

That is certainly the problem with a clearly OTA mod, and why a number of mods prefer to just start a new universe altogether.

Also, reflecting TA units graphically is largely a matter of opinion, and to be honest, a far harder task then either a) simply remodelling or b) starting a new mod with a new setting.

Individually a word cannot be copyrighted but combined with a load of other words thrown into a certain context it can be. Cavedog/Atari don't have a copyright on the word "Peewee" but they have a copyright on a light T1 infantry KBot "Peewee" belonging to the Arm faction and using an EMG. Just changing one or two of those attributes won't help as long as it's clear that the new unit is a derivative of the old one.

Change K-Bot to mech, Nano to Latice beam(and change nanospray to a laser!)

To me that would make a huge difference, plus a laser versus nano particles would save on particle count for cool effects!
