Has anyone got Ubuntu running on the PS3 and tried running Spring? I'm tempted to get a PS3 and was just wondering if it would work...
Also if anyone has run Ubuntu on the PS3 how does it run?

LOLZ @ getting a P$3
Ridiculous price for a console (I'm buying a games console, not a multimedia suite)
Poor library of games
Inferior online service to Xbox 360
Looks like a George Foreman grill with Spider Man font
On topic:
Not sure. However, I think I remember reading an article that said Linux has access to only one of the cores and doesn't have access to the GPU. So it might be difficult. I am most likely completely wrong however.
Edit:
You might be able to get someone from here to try it for you:

I suppose but:-
cost doesn't really bother me
it will have GT5
i'll give you the inferior online service
its a console not a fashion contest
I'd heard they had blocked RSX access but I also heard there was a project to get 3d accelleration using the cell. Don't know if anyone knows anything about this, I just wondered if it would work. To be honest looking at the performance most are getting I doubt it would. Shame its so locked down.

That's pretty good timing

yeah good timing, think the 256mb of Ram will be an issue for Spring though, especially with the slow hard drive acting as the swap file. Would be interesting to see if they can get the vista style usb swap drive working...

The PS3 indeed restricts access to its graphics
hardware by running it in a hypervisor, so OGL
rendering would have to be implemented on the
SPE processors themselves (of which the Linux
kernel can address 6) before Spring would work
at all. Up for a challenge much?

Keep in mind that the strength of the PS3 is to have 8 cores (8 cells). TASpring is NOT multithreaded ... thus it will use only one core.
The PS3's cores are not that powerful ... as I said, it's strength is the fact that it has 8 of them.
Also, note that the GPU of the PS3 is a piece of shit, it counts on the fact that the game's special effects are rendered mostly by the software. Once again, TASpring was NOT optimized for that kind of achitecture. TaSpring was designed assuming "decent" HARDWARE processing.
But to answer you question : YES it should work ... but it will be of very very low performances.

To get ubuntu on the ps3 you're going to need to first put fedora on it. from what i've heard from friends who wanted ubuntu on their ps3 they had to use some trick and couldn't directly install ubuntu to the ps3. i used yellow dog linux with has a distrobution designed for the ps3. If you need help with any of it feel free to pm me about it.
Oh and don't install linux to your ps3 if you have a SD tv because the resolution is going to be horrid.

Probably because people tried to put normal ubuntu on it, there is a specific ps3 ubuntu cd, people just need to use their brains.

yeah i was planning to use
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PlayStation_3
but thanks for the offer, think i'll wait to see the results of them trying to get access to the graphics hardware as until then its not going to be that powerfull a manchine really.
