which of these is better
an onboard nvidia 6100
or a pci nvidia fx 5500
?

the PCI bus tends to be fairly inadequate for supporting 3d rendering...you'll probably get unholy framerates with the 5500.

fx 5500 is fine if you turn the settings down. You're better of with a 7600gt (What I have, cept mine is gtx but meh) cause you can get them now for very cheap and they're a great vid card.

in glxgears (linux) i get like 2k FPS with the onboard video.

Prolly the 6100
but the ram will be clocked more slowly and it probably has fewer pixel pipelines, however, in an RTS the pixel pipelines available matter less than in say an FPS.
If you put a gig of ddr2 in with the 6100 you should do pretty well.

I have 1gb of ram, the onboard 6100, amd athlon 64 3500+
the next thing to upgrade i guess is the graphics card, then monitor, then i'm done for a while
