Libregamewiki - New Wiki for open source games

I just saw this on Digg. I'm posting it because clearly, Spring needs some entries on here, but there's a catch. The wiki is separated into different categories for engines and games. Should Spring be entered as SpringRTS in the engines section, then all the Spring mods have separate articles in the games category? Or should we just put one big entry under games with all the mods listed?

spring is moving to a a more "engine" role, so my opinion is to list spring as engine and mods as games who uses the spring engine

mods can be added only when they match the license requierements, so only a very small portion of the mods can get in there (no TA-based mods for example)

I think the only one that would fit the license bit is NanoBlobs.

I'd add something about Kernel Panic anyway 8)

I was assuming that NanoBlobs or Kernel Panic would work. Are any of the other mods 100% OTA content free and GPL now? Is anyone working to GPL their mods?

I'll see about working up other material for alternative (CC/public domain) licensed titles.

Read the license requirements - GPL is not required - it is one of many accepted licenses.

S44 is (obviously) OTA content free and will be released under Creative Commons when it's done, which is a far superior license to GPL for content and mods.

EE, like gundam, is a private copyright.

They have an ENGINE listing, we can add spring in there as an all around project as well.

Yeah, but any Lua code or maybe even COB scripting in the mod would probably have to be under one of the free Sourcecode licenses they accept. The COB scripting is probably debatable and could probably go under a media license, but the Lua code definitely would need to be under one of these: http://libregamewiki.org/Free/libre_source_code_license

I don't suppose Smoth or Fang would feel like releasing the media to their mods under Creative Commons - Attribution Share Alike which seems to be close enough to their attitudes about their work.

We mentioned that, but adding Spring without any playable content won't look so good.

Why? The engine section looks to me like it's meant for developers looking for an engine for their game, not for gamers to download and play stuff on.

TBH I doubt they will check to see if our i's are dotted and t's are crossed, so long as the licensing is within the realm of open use software. With all the much-debated questions surrounding the implications of GPL'd scripting on mods, it wouldn't really be fair to ask modders to GPL their scripts just so we can be listed on some wiki that nobody's ever heard of anyways.

Isnt EE fang's creation? I mean, why would he want people to not advertise his game for free? :)

In the sense that Supreme Commander is based off Total Annihilation...

It's not open sourced. That's what I'm saying. If they allow people to post closed sourced games then fine, someone feel free to add it.

EE isn't tied to Earth but it's tied to Fang's willingness to release it under CC/GPL/whatever which I doubt exists.

If I recall, I might be wrong, Fang wanted to retain the rights to it so nobody could butcher it - which, given some of the mashup games released under the radar for Spring, makes perfect sense.

why cant we put OTA mods into the wiki? I mean, Total Annihiliation is virtually non-existent anymore. Since you cannot make a profit off of it anymore, then it sould be fine.
