The hiberian peninsula was dominated by ??, then by ??, then by the romans, then the invading tribes from the north for a short while, then a few centuries by the new born musslins. In fact, that culture left by them, which were quite more advanced than the medieval europe, (and the one gathered in the crusades) was one of the main factors the helped europe leave the "Dark Ages" and head into renaiscansse.

You know, it is quite a funny thing. In those days, europe was a bunch of crude barbarians while the musslin world was far more advanced. They had madicine, poetry, music, theater, sciences (like Algebra), more advanced irrigation and cultivation techniques, etc. Centuries later, is has turned completely around...
