well really, I'm asking if I can use FPS controls in the "normal" rts camera? is it possible through modding

Why not switch to Rotatable overhead camera and point it straight down?

From underground sources I've been able to glean that my way wont work and this is only possible through direct engine edits (which source says no-one is interested in doing).

ctrl+scrollwheel changes the viewangle between straight forward and straight down in OTA view.
