I often use Brit. I myself am British. I always thought it was just a shorter way of saying 'A British Person'. I still don't see the insult involved.

I was surprised to hear that "Japs" is considered a slur by some as well (ages ago when I found out)... it's strange, since "JAP" is so commonly used in the commercial world, and in lots of other places.
