Tactic or cheat

Most of us now that projectile and missle units when ordered to fire at the point of a cliff or something with high elavation; the projectile/missile goes further and with proper use you could use 10 rocko's to create missle storms from the other side of a cliff. Or you could use a flash order it to shoot at something high up and steep and the projectiles will go high up and bombard whats ever behind the cliff. Is it considered cheating?

I never have considered it cheating. I alway figure if you have the time to micro that unit then odds are I am not sticking it in your pooper quick enough!

Its fun in XTA considering AA can hit land. Atleast back in the day where I saw KnoX alot playing XTA, it didnt require any micro at all; just a simple line formation and fire at the tip of a cliff.

i forsee everything that you can do on the game, that you could do in real life is not cheating

This trick date back to TotalA.exe. And it wasn't a cheat, just a pro tip, that anyway could only be used rarely save on small divide and such.
It makes sense in the virtual world, the range benefit is more than counterbalanced by the lack of proper aiming and the considerable amoun of micro needed .... Hey what about writing a LUA widget to abuse that trick?

It takes a lot of micro and effort, and the results are somewhat inconsistent. I think it's a legitimate tactic, not an OMG HAX kind of thing. And in any case, it's within the laws of physics. I used to extend the range of guardians et al. this way.

You can do something similar using plasma deflectors but the huge amount of
problems to make it be usefull for anything make it useless... but its cool to put a krogoth behind a peewee shooting at a plasma deflector and watch... :)

if your opponent can do the same thing then its not cheating

Very true.

That trick was called cheat in OTA.
I also say its a cheat, they are not ment to shoot like that. If they were, they would shoot automatically like that always when possible...
But i do that with berthas anyways, because they sometimes cant aim to some place behind some hill.

It's a bug if anything.

Thats right. Exploiting a bug might be called cheating tough, but I think its the same thing than using a overpowered unit: The problem is with the mod, not with you.

It doesnt really make sense that you can do it, as it happens purely because the range ring doesnt reflect the actual range of the unit. For almost all weapons, they can exceed their range by at least 33-50%.
For ballistic weapons, their actual max range is dictated by their weaponvelocity, the range ring is an entirely artificial construct which merely restricts them from firing further.
In real life, if your weapon could be made to fire at that range, then you would fire it at that range. Generally all that would suffer is its accuracy.
From a game balance perspective though, if you really want to do this (And FPS is way better than shooting at hills, you can really kill a HLT with a rocko doing it) then go for it. The amount of time and effort it takes is rarely worth it.

What annoys me is that Spring enforces the range with some hardcoded values, missiles get a flighttime that is not influencable by the modder and even worse ignores accelleration and startvelocity so missiles that accellerate slowly won't be able to travel to their maximum range, same for starbursts that are meant to rise not that high.

I managed to make a peewee shot 5 times further than his max range allows to
and I'm pretty sure theres more than that
I don't think thats a bug - Id say its a pro tip - like said before
anyway I don't use that too often as it is not too comfortable to use (or am I wrong ?)

Things like that might only be usefull in mods with lots of microing involved, like XTA. In BA the whole stuff is more about macroing and so I dont think actions with 1 unit are usefull.

That is bug. Or else that kind shooting would be possible without aiming the cliffs >__>
FPS mode is already restricted to do such things, so it is a fucking bug that i can use cliffs to do such things. Im fucking right.

I think units have the power and fire angle to that kind of shooting but the mod limits then to their normal shooting, so yes, its a bug.

its a tactic because it takes alot of microtime

The two are not mutually exclusive.
