TIME TO FIX IT YO!

ok this is the plan

1) Two Websites
- http://www.unknown-files.net & http://www.miniuf.net
2) Shorter file urls
- EG, spring.uf-file.net/029234/ or spring.uf-file.net/029234/Balanced_Annhialation/

---------------------------------------------------

www.unknown-files.net
- Has all the functionality of the current site and much much more but in a simple user friendly way.
- Changes
- The Files
- Users can 'Digg' files (dont have a name for this yet)
- This 'Digg' value goes into the files 'Rateing'
- Users can review files - requires rating on several key points (defined per category)
- A file has two measures, the Rateing and the Review Score (average of both - see gamespot)
- Watch files (user is emailed uppon file update)

- The Users
- Can recieve kudos from other users for individual files
- Can make their own website themes with a template set (released after the site goes live)
- can customise alot more stuff (how the site works for them)
- have their own 'myspace' style profile

- Misc site stuff
- Per file, Per day download stats
- Per site Per day download stats
- Per day for the whole network of sites download stats
- The home page has a small ammount of news (latest 2 items)
- The home page has an area for new files
- The home page has an area for dugg files (name?)
- Driven by templates (so users can make new stuff and shut the fuck up about my crappy graphics skills)
- RSS feed for new files
- Comment system greatly improved and not hidden
- Viewing pictures will be much easier (&better)
- Providing site feedback will be easy as pie
- FAQ renamed to site help and specificaly aimed at help
- Online live help (provided through #unknown in spring lobby via JAVA app)
- intuitive help messages where needed (float)
- File of the week
- Stats page with stuff like Top 10 downloads this week, Latest 10 files, Most dugg files this week, etc etc.

- Search
- Fixed

- Community Crap
- Community pages (to be decided - please leave feedback here)
- Game guides
- Stratergy Guides
- Unit Guides
- Moar
- Tutorials
- Install guides (per category)
- Screenshots page

- Site design
- Less page loading more useability

- Uploading Files
- Alot easier
- Grouping will be fixed (wtf was i thinking)
- User admin panel will be fixed
- User admin panel will now be much much much much much much more straight forwards

For the admins also, the way the site is administered will be changed quite drasticaly, with 1 central admin panel instead of the current 12 or whatever it is.

Requires - Javascript

www.miniuf.net
- browse and search files for download. and nothing else, minimal theme.

Requires - nothing

ill post more as its done, the above specs are not the be all end all but heres an example of the cut down registration page (note this is actually quite old now and the contence of the menues has changed.)

something else i didnt mention is that both miniuf.net and unknown-files.net will be on seperate servers with their own copy of the database, meaning if one goes down, the other should be completely fine :)

looks like a solid design

what is the approximate time-to-finish?

EDIT: may i suggest an automatic torrent link generation for the bigger files? UF may be one of the seeders & still display the ads when giving the link to the client

the reason i have never actually implemented torrents is that i have never seen the benefits. what are they?

Would use a lot less of your bandwith...

3 of the servers are unmetered lol

mostly clients will benefit from them, and in some cases your bandwith usage too.

let me show you with an example:

regular download:

server has 500KB/sec upload power

1 client conenct wich has 750 KB/sec download power

client gets full bandwith & downloads @ 500 KB/sec

if another 750KB/sec client will connect, the speed will split ideally in 2:

both will have 250 KB/sec download speed

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

same situation with torrents & each clients shares 30 KB/sec upload

each client will get 250 KB/sec from the server AND 30 KB/sec sent from the other clients downloading the file for an improvement of 30 KB/sec without any additional load to the server

the positive part is that if lot of clients will download the same file at the same time, part of traffic will be generated between clients themself, saving you bandwith usage

anticipating i don't know php, i googled 20 secs and found this project:

http://www.torrentflux.com/

you'd need to remove the grafic interface and automate the torrent submitting/creating process, then display the resulting link

(i didn't check if it supports, but you'll need to use it in trackerless mode)

Looks nice!! Thx for it!

BTW: I dont think a torrent system is neccessary for us. There are just too few people who would upload, arent there? But if the server is capable of uploading only 500kb/s we should add more of them :)

I could host some files on my server too, there is still alot of free bandwidth. So PM me if this would be useful.

i have got a breakdown of the server specs and priceing and ad income in a spread sheet but ive just formated so i need to get office installed again

once i have ill post in the other thread.

but 1 of the servers has a 10 mbps connection dedicated bandwidth (unmetered)

1 has 100 mbps connection shared bandwidth (unmetered)

main server (website host) has 100 mbps dedicated bandwidth (4000 gb/pm)

theres also a UK server comming online with new UF with a 100mbps dedicated line and a new shared server that should be quite fast also.

I could look into this at some point but I have a lot of other things to do for the coming months so don't expect me to take this up.

Good idea, Cup, good plan.

So, I've been working a lot, but do you want to boost your League ranking by thrashing me when I'm next on?
