I tried to look into modifying the wiki code, but its a lot more complicated than the phpbb fix. They're using their own framework to handle templating etc.. and it's not really clear what it does.

If someone is willing to implement a captcha; take a look at http://recaptcha.net/learnmore.html ; seems a cool idea (basically uses scans from real books as captchas, and then uses the inputed data to help digitize them)

You don't really need a captcha though... as long as you have a simple question that is not used for other large sites, it works.
